    Metallurgist, Comminution - Metallurgy Skyview

    Job description

    MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

    The main purpose of this position is to project manage metallurgy projects, where a large component of the work is related to comminution testwork.

    Furthermore, to physically conduct, with the help of laboratory operators, a wide range of metallurgical tests on ores and other materials.

    REPORTING STRUCTURE

    Reports to the Manager of manager of Minerals Processing.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Client interaction and proposal writing: Assist the unit manager in creating suitable testwork programs (project proposals) to meet the client’s objectives.
    • Follow up regularly on proposals submitted and give feedback to the manager.
    • Project Management: Control all activities related to an assigned project, including coordination of sample preparation and associated staff, QC/QA of samples prepared, data acquisition using available equipment and QC/QA of the data, liaison with all other departments, divisions and subcontractors involved. Taking ownership of the entire project.
    • Make sure all project admin is up to date (proposal acceptance form, PO, credit application, order booked in BOSS, proposal revisions, order confirmation, etc.).
    • Be the single point of contact with the client.
    • Make sure he/she knows exactly what work needs to be done in all the different sections of MetMin, for the specific project.
    • Adequately define and clarify the Scope of Work with the client and with the team members from different departments.
    • Check the samples vs. sample list.
    • Arrange with all the sections involved to get their splits/products for the testwork they have to do.
    • Make sure the prep is done correctly - the project manager must at least be at the crusher during the start of the sample preparation.
    • Manage the schedule – get schedules from all the sections and communicate with the client – manage the deadline.
    • Must know immediately if a part of the project goes off track and must immediately take action to rectify.
    • Arrange internal meetings to track/manage the project.
    • Management, training and direction of technical support staff in quality, testwork methodology, safety and time management.
    • Keep all sections focused on delivery of their individual parts of the testwork, but also to be the ‘link’ between the different sections.
    • Put together the final report (all work from all sections in one report) and do the editing – with the help of the managers and other specialists.
    • In this regard, all sections must use the same report template (font size, table properties, heading styles, captions etc.).
    • Put together and check the invoice – with the help of the line managers.
    • Follow up with client and relay feedback from client.
    • Arrange/lead project review when required.
    • Ensure timely payment of invoice to full project closure.
    • Formatting, editing and setting up of forms required to record testwork results and data.
    • Responsible for the effective and appropriate use of equipment, facilities and good housekeeping.
    • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
    • Possible travel to other SGS laboratory locations in South Africa or overseas on either short term assignments or longer term assignments as part of a strategic initiative.
    • Perform any other reasonable task as assigned by direct line manager.
    • Extended hours may be required from time to time.
    • Travel to other SGS locations may be required from time to time.

    • Number and value of successfully completed projects.
    • Number of projects completed on time.
    • Client satisfaction as measured by Client Feedback Survey, compliments or complaints.

    • Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or enter hazardous environments without the necessary knowledge and protection and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
    • Cease to carry on with work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
    • Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education

    Degree or diploma in chemical engineering or metallurgy

    Experience

    3 - 5 years of previous metallurgical working experience.

    Competencies

    • Must be proficient in using various type of computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.).
    • Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment.
    • Very good analytical and report writing skills.
    • Good communication and people skills.
    • Project Management.
