    Welding Superintendent

    Job description

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

    To oversee all welding technical queries and do problem solving for welding related issues.

    Key Kerformance Indicators:

    • Report on and record all weld defects on a system and monitor trends.
    • Report on and recommend welding production improvement methods.
    • Knowledge of all project procedure, processes, requirements and acceptable standards.
    • Provide technical input when and where required.
    • Investigate and implement new welding, inspection and NDT technology.
    • Investigate and recommend welding consumables and equipment to ensure higher effectiveness.
    • Assist in theoretical and practical training / development of foremen, Supervisors & welders.
    • Ensure welders are qualified for the work to be performed and qualified procedures are in place.
    • Organise resources and manage the testing of new welders.
    • Investigate and implement at least three continuous improvement initiatives per annum.
    • Assist in managing bottlenecks on the plant by managing a welding team on critical equipment.
    • Knowledge of welding and heat treatment of heat resisting steels


    Key Responsibilities

    • Manage welder testing productivity and efficiency.
    • Manage welding crew when required.
    • Ensure weld sequences and method statements are provided for all jobs and are up to date.
    • Assist with PQR’S and generating WPS’S .
    • Ensure all welders have been coded to specifications.
    • Ensure welder registers and qualification status of all Welders is up to date.
    • Report on outstanding or sub-standard performance in relation to Welding.
    • Ensure that weld maps, weld matrices and reports are correct, updated and according to standard.
    • Familiarize with departmental and project procedures, factory process, Client requirements and standards.
    • Provide practical input into weld profile and quality.
    • Report objectively and accurately on findings regarding welding.
    • Provide technical input into failure investigations.
    • Provide assistance with code and specification interpretation.
    • Interface with project team members and Client representatives.
    • Perform random audits on consumable & material control and traceability.
    • Assist quality department with writing of works instructions, performing internal and external audits.
    • Assist in closing out NCR’s.
    • Interface with project team members and Client representatives.
    • Oversee all Welding related issues and provide technical support.
    • Resolve and close out welding related problems.
    • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Ensure high standards of safety and quality are adhered to.
    • Assist the Management team in running the site in a safe manner and within budget and on time.
    • Must be able to work unsupervised and lead a team.
    • Must maintain and run a computer based weld record system that will ensure management reports, repair rates, compressive weld reports are generated and all records are maintained to ensure the information can be included in the data books.

    EXPERIENCE:

    • Welder trade qualification (must) and Boilermaker trade (wish). Inspection qualification will be an advantage.
    • 5 Years experience in site welding environment , structures & Piping.
    • 3 Years structural steel, consumables, plant and welding equipment knowledge.
    • Knowledge of distortion control and automated welding processes will be an advantage.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Welder trade qualification.

    SAIW Level 2 or IWS certificate or IWT (must). IWI – S or IWI – C certificate will be an advantage.
