    ER Manager

    Main Purpose of the job:

    • Drive the consistent application of Employee Relations policies, procedures, processes and templates throughout Makro in order to reduce risk and comply with legislation

     

    Key performance areas

    Translate Employee Relations Strategy into best practice policies, processes and business solutions

    • Research Employee Relations retail industry trends and best practice to enhance Employee Relations
    • Keep abreast all relevant legislation
    • Research best practice Employee Relations systems that will optimize the Employee Relations process and increase compliance to legislation
    • Contribute towards the development of Employee Relations strategy
    • Create and maintain Employee Relations policies, procedures, processes and templates that are aligned with best practice and legislation
    • Employee Relations solutions that will facilitate the successful resolution of employee Relations matters

    Drive the consistent implementation of Employee Relations policies, procedures and practices within Makro

    • Publish approved Employee Relations policies, procedures, processes and templates
    • Mentor and coach HR Managers and stakeholders on the consistent application of Employee Relations legislation, policies, procedures, processes and templates
    • Collaborate with Learning and Development to develop Employee Relations learning material
    • Drive the awareness and education of Employee Relations policies, procedures and practices
    • Create awareness of Employee Relations best practice throughout Makro

    Evaluate the impact of Employee Relations within Makro

    • Develop and implement metrics and feedback mechanisms to measure the impact of the success of the Employee Relations
    • Analyse the Employee Relations trends within Makro and make recommendations and create awareness around trends
    • Collaborate with the Employee Relations team to address Employee Relations gaps and realigning strategy, policies, procedures, processes and templates
    • Report on the status of Employee Relations within Makro

    Team human resources management

    • Drive compliance to Employment Equity legislation and Skills Development within team
    • Enhance staff retention and identify trends to reduce staff turnover within team
    • Monitor staff satisfaction to reduce risk and meet the business objectives of the organisation
    • Conduct monthly one-on-one sessions with team members
    • Coach and mentor team members
    • Create succession plan within team ensure that medium and long term talent requirements are catered for
    • Manage team development by providing role clarity, allowing them skills diversity, performance managing and developing them appropriately
    • Demonstrate abilities to anticipate and manage change

    Manage third party disputes

    • Track all incoming cases and allocate cases
    • Evaluate third party dispute and advise stakeholders on methods to reduce risk Makro
    • Evaluate all cases where recession was not granted and determine if the cases should go under review
    • Advise stakeholders on the merits of the case under review
    • Liaise with the relevant attorney to handle the review process
    • Communicate the outcome of the case with the relevant stakeholder

    Manage the relationship between Makro and the relevant Unions

    • Support the creation and maintain of sound relationship with Union representatives
    • Participate in the annual collective bargaining negotiations in line with the collective agreement
    • Participate union engagements including dispute resolution and negotiate collective bargaining agreements with Unions

     

    Minimum Academic Requirements, Professional Qualifications, and Experience:

    • At least a Post-graduate degree in Human Resources; Industrial Psychology or law
    • 10 years’ experience in labour relations

     

    Core Competencies

    • Expert and strategic knowledge of Human Resources processes
    • Good knowledge of Labour legislation and how it can be used as a strategic tool in the business
    • Current knowledge of best practice for Human Resources in a retail environment
    • Excellent understanding of the business operating model
    • Express and implied ethical responsibilities
