    Food Safety Specialist Operations

    Summary
    Main objectives for this position is to ensure compliance against the Massmart Operational Food Safety Management System policies, procedures and standards to ensure that stores adhere, implement and maintain Massmart food safety and quality requirements.

    FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Main components of position

    • Food Safety Management System
    • Roll-out of food safety management system
    •  Audits
    •  Sub-contractors
    •  Training
    • Corrective actions
    • Environmental Micro screening (Makro & Cambridge)
    • Store inspections
    • Equipment design inputs
    • Recalls and regulatory visit system

    General

     Food Safety Management System

    •  Familiarization with the food safety management system.
    •  Ensure leasing and regular meetings with service provider.
    •  Leasing with Massmart Team
    •  Changes to the system needs to be requested on the Change request form and sent trough to Massmart.
    • Yearly attendance of the Operational Food Safety Management Workshop is mandatory.
    • Communication: All effected individuals in the chain, risk committee, Massmart, Stores, Operational committee, or relevant individuals as per chain specific requirements.

    Roll-out of food safety management system

     

    •  Identify new store/s or store/s that requires a roll-out (high staff turnover, revamp, new store etc.)
    •  Schedule off roll-out with service provider.
    •  Ensure communication is in place and that the relevant staff is available on the day of the roll-out.
    • Managing attendance registers of roll-out.
    •  Escalating attendance registers to HR.

    Audits

     

    • Manage scheduling of audits with service provider.
    •  Monitoring and reporting of food safety audit scores.
    • Ensure that all audits take place according to the audit schedule.

    Sub – Contractors

    •  Lease with sub-contractors on the Massmart Food Safety System requirements, relevant to their area of operation.
    •  Pest Control, Cleaning Chemicals, Labour Brokers, 3rd party food operators (e.g. restaurant, canteen, coffee shops), Waste Removal Companies.

     Training

     

    • Ensure staff is notified of the set training dates.
    •  Leasing with HR on training.
    •  Management of attendance registers.
    •  Ensure tracking of trained and un-trained staff is in place.
    •  Identify staff to attend training.
    • Scheduling of additional training as required with service provider.

    Corrective Actions

     

    • Management of corrective actions with stores between audits.
    •  Ensure all corrective action reports are completed.
    • Follow up with stores to ensure close-out of corrective actions.
    • Assist stores in identifying corrective actions where needed.

    Environmental Micro Screening

    •  Management of monthly screening done by the 3rd party laboratory.
    •  Follow up on non-conformances.
    •  Investigating and close-out of non-conformances identified in reports.

    Store Inspections

    •  Store inspections to be done as per chain requirements or to address any non-conformances or identified food safety or quality
    • related issues.
    • All store inspections to be recorded on the Massmart store report template.

     Equipment design inputs

    • Ensure inputs is given to new store design team with regards to equipment requirements, layout and facility design which will affect food safety.
    • Ensure the Walmart facility design standard for food safety is always incorporated in new store designs, revamp store plans.
    •  Bring any incorrect store layouts, equipment or cross-contamination risk due to store layout to the store development team.

    Recall and regulatory system

     

    • Training of new staff on the recall and regulatory system using the Massmart training modules.
    • Ensure stores use the system.
    • Ensure compliance to recall and regulatory instructions.
    • Assist stores in regulatory visit close-outs.
    •  Escalate all serious regulatory and recall related issues to Massmart.

    General

    •  Any other food safety or quality related requirements as needed by the business.
    •  Assistance in the closing of customer complaints when and where required

    Requirements:
    Minimum Academic, Professional Qualifications & Experience required for this position
    Relevant Diploma in Food Science and/or Technology and 5 – 6 years related experience.
