    Wits School of Education - Faculty of Humanities
    Department Description  
         

    • The University of the Witwatersrand, located in the economic and cultural hub of South and Southern Africa, is strategically placed to play a major role in the development of education in the country and the region. The Wits School of Education is a research-led teacher education School and offers undergraduate teacher qualifications, postgraduate studies, continuous professional development and educational research opportunities in a wide range of knowledge domains and associated disciplines. In addition, the School includes three teaching and research centres, specializing in Mathematics and Science Education, Deaf Education, and Education and the Labour Market.  

    Brief Description        

    • The Faculty of Humanities invites applications for the Headship of the Wits School of Education.
    • The applicant should have appropriate academic qualifications, a relevant doctoral degree, and a professional qualification. He/she should demonstrate a track record of visionary leadership and hands-on management experience within a university and/or other organization in the field of Education. He/she should have proven teaching experience at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and demonstrate passion for the improvement of teaching and for research in teacher education and the field of education more generally. In order to command the respect and confidence of the School, the Head should also have standing in the field, with both academic and professional experience. A good understanding and knowledge of the South African educational environment would be highly recommended.
    • The Head of School will be required to set the direction of the School within the wider mission of the Faculty and University and to lead and manage the School in meeting its strategic goals. The successful candidate must provide academic and research leadership, by positioning the School appropriately in local, national, regional and global contexts. He/she will be responsible for the financial management, human resource management and administration of the School.
    • The standard period of employment is five years after which the candidate may seek another term or be integrated into a senior teaching and research position in the School, or, if the appointee is an existing member of the permanent staff, he/she will revert to his/her previous academic position.

    Remuneration will be appropriate to the seniority of the post and will be negotiated on an individual basis.
