    • Vestas is the energy industry's global partner on sustainable energy solutions. We design, manufacture, install, and service wind turbines across the globe. Service Department South Africa > Currently operates and services 8 wind farms throughout South Africa. A fleet of over 236 turbines, producing over 500 M/W. The department is expanding with 4 new wind farms expected to be in production by late 2021, taking the combined output to over 900 M/W. The department currently consists of just over 45 staff members.

    Responsibilities

    • Regular inspections and reporting, maintenance, supervision of contractors, switching operations on high and medium voltage electrical machinery associated with a Wind Energy Facility comprising 2 X 132kV / 33kV 60 MVA transformers and NECRTs and 132kV outdoor switchgear, 2 X 33kV Capacitor banks, indoor 33kV switchgear, protection systems, metering, low voltage installations, SCADA systems, 37 X wind turbine generators 33kV switchgear, assisting turbine technicians with switching and issuing of permits and inspections of turbine transformers located in nacelles at the tower tops.
    • Administration of maintenance records and scheduling of monthly, yearly, 3, and 5 yearly maintenance, initiating operations, taking charge of the work and arranging for contractors where necessary.
    • Closely adhere to all safety standards and procedures. Act as a safety role model, encourage and recognize others completing safe acts, and intervene when unsafe acts are being practiced. Identify gaps in safety standards and safety risks in the operational environment, implement effective risk mitigation, and provide recommendations to higher level technical staff and management
    • Demonstrate and promote integrity, good initiative, a no-compromise focus on safety, and quality of work on a continuous basis and may assist with or perform basic quality audits of less skilled staff
    • Perform intermediate level wind turbine maintenance and installation tasks as assigned, such as proficient operation and use of tools (including but not limited to specialized calibration, hydraulic, power tools) and basic turbine equipment. Document tasks where required and enters data into company system (e.g. SAP)
    • Follow basic structured problem-solving process to complete troubleshooting and diagnostic tasks to include the use of diagnostic tools (e.g. basic fluke meter functions, hydraulic task gauge) and initiate and perform most work tasks, as well as follow defined instructions and maintenance schedules, completing plans as directed, and perform according to written and verbal instruction from higher level technical staff
    • Effectively promote professional team environment by assisting teammates in accomplishing goals and mentoring lower level technical staff. Visibly support and promote change initiatives and team spirit and teamwork as well as effectively look for improvement opportunities to job appropriate processes and procedures and communicate through appropriate channels or implement improvements using the appropriate control management protocol
    • Interface with customer and may respond to customer inquiries. Refer complex customer inquiries to higher level technical staff or manager. Demonstrate professional customer focus at all times

    Qualification

    Trade tested- Electrical

    OHS Act General Machinery Regulations: An engineering diploma in electrotechnical (heavy current) fields with an academic qualification of at least T3 or N5, or of an equivalent level, and who subsequent to achieving such qualification has had not less than two years' practical experience in the operation and maintenance appropriate to the above class of machinery.

    Report daily at Hopefield Wind Farm on R45, near Hopefield town, Western Cape.

    Competencies

    • Ability to constantly climb stairs and ladders 60-125 meters in height, in order to access work area as well as the ability to frequently lift, test, pull, and carry items up to 30 Kg in weight
    • Ability to frequently walk, stand, look up/down, balance, stoop, twist, kneel, and bend and the ability to constantly grip and manually manipulate, often with repetitive motion, items such as, but not limited to, hand tools and turbine parts
    • Comfort constantly working in confined spaces and at heights over 100 meters
    • Ability to speak, read, comprehend, and write in English as well as the ability to effectively participate in all training courses.
    • Comfort working remotely in a Turbine as part of a team with limited supervisory interaction
    • Ability to work in a respirator, including passing a respirator medical evaluation and fit test
