    Lecturer

The Film and Television Department of the Wits School of Arts is looking to appoint a Lecturer to work in an exciting learning environment which emphasizes a theoretically-informed filmmaking practice. This is a full-time (100 %) permanent position, with a probation period of 3 years. We are looking for an innovative Screen Studies theory lecturer and practitioner with a demonstrable teaching and research experience at tertiary level. Ideally the successful candidate would start in February 2020.

    Responsibilities:
The person appointed will be required to teach in the BAFT Academic major courses, Screen Studies II and III.  At the second-year level, the Screen Studies academic major explores different cinemas, providing students with an overview of the aesthetics, themes, political and social contexts that inform varying filmmaking practices. The third-year level Screen Studies extends theoretical debates established in the second year with reference to film studies, theory and criticism. A critical framework will be developed and applied in relation to historically dominant discourses. The course will further explore the future role of narratives and cinema within a decolonized global context.

The lecturer will thus champion the academic majors within the department – but also be involved in curriculum development, project assessment, postgraduate supervision and take on departmental /School portfolios as part of their academic citizenship. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to broader academic planning, at times teach in other courses in the School/department, as well as partake in general departmental meetings and operational processes.

    Qualifications:

    •  A minimum of a MA/MFA degree, a PhD or substantial progress.
    •  Applicants would be expected to submit their PhDs for examination within three years of  appointment.

    Competencies and Experience required:

    •  A combined tertiary teaching and industry experience of no less than 5 years.

The candidate appointed to the post should be:

    •  a team player within the department, but also be invested in cross-disciplinary explorations within the School of Arts
    •  interested in developing their academic career with further academic study, and/or research scholarly or practice-based research
    •  well-suited to post graduate supervision of research.
    •  able and enthusiastic to engage in course development and other teaching
