    Project Support Specialist

    Job description

    About being a Project Support Specialist (Sponsored Projects) at Siyavula

    As a Project Support Specialist, you will join a team that has dedicated itself to making a difference in maths and science education in South Africa (with the goal of positively impacting Southern Africa at large) through technology.

    We at Siyavula believe that quality education should be accessible. With help from foundations and corporate sponsors, learners at government schools from across the country can earn access or are given free access to our premium maths and science product.  Not only that, but anyone can freely download and read our CAPS-aligned, Maths and Science textbooks from our website: www.everythingmaths.co.za

    Like the rest of the team, Project Support Specialists have a solid understanding of and empathy for South Africa’s rich cultural diversity. We work in all types of settings - from the office in the Cape Town CBD, to schools in urban townships and rural villages. You’ll be asked to confidently explain our education technology to teachers, principals and education department advisors. You should also be able to communicate and connect with learners from the lower-income context.

    The kind of work you will be a part of

    You will play an essential role in Siyavula’s sponsored projects as the direct link between Siyavula and the communities, teachers, and learners that engage with our practice tool. You will lead workshops directed at principals, teachers, and curriculum specialists, which introduce eLearning concepts in general and the Siyavula practice tool in particular. You should be able to confidently discuss high school level maths and science with teachers and learners.

    In the first quarter of the year, up to 70% of your time will be spent travelling independently. You will spend up to 30% of your time on the road from April through December.

    Throughout the year, you will visit schools across the nine provinces. Some of these visits will be with a colleague and some will be on your own. You therefore need to be self sufficient, energetic, organised, and comfortable with travel.

    When you’re not on the road or at schools, you will be in charge of keeping communication channels between Siyavula and the schools open and clear to ensure they are optimally supported. Because you’ve visited the schools and spoken with learners, you are integral in putting a “face” to the data. You’ll assist in identifying top learners and understanding their motivation for success. You will provide written reports of your visits to the Project Manager. You will work to engage learners over all types of media: Facebook, radio, or even newspaper. Importantly, you will understand that working in a start up environment requires flexibility and initiative.

    In addition to the duties of your immediate team, you’ll also partake in company-wide activities like our weekly company lunch on Fridays, but most people find that part pretty easy!

    Roles and Responsibilities

    • Initiate contact and set up appointments with various parties for the purposes of introducing them to the Siyavula Practice Service.

    • Organise some travel related matters: resources needed for school visits and maintain organisation on the road.

    • Run workshops with schools and organisations to help integrate digital resources and tools into their practice.

    • Build and maintain trust between Siyavula and its users: the focus being mostly on high school learners and active teachers.

    • Evangelise Siyavula Practice and its benefits wherever possible: you will often be the face of Siyavula!

    • Reach out, engage, and connect with learners over social media and/or other media opportunities.

    • Assess and understand our users’ experience in order to assist them in using Siyavula products with the resources at hand.

    • Report back to assigned team and project manager on nature of school relationships, school visits, insights, and lessons learned.

    Requirements

    We are looking for someone with a tertiary degree and 1-3 years experience in research, training, fieldwork, facilitation, or education who:

    • can speak three or more official languages;

    • can demonstrate personal interest in leveraging technology;

    • is able to troubleshoot technology products on the go;

    • is comfortable and familiar with high school level maths and science;

    • can work independently;

    • can think on their feet;

    • has excellent organisational and planning skills;

    • is able to effectively communicate in conversation and in writing;

    • has relevant experience using software tools for communication and learning;

    • is familiar and confident using social media and connecting to younger audiences;

    • can present with confidence to a large audience;

    • has attention to detail and strong reasoning and critical-thinking skills;

    • has the ability to maintain and nurture relationships; and

    • has a valid driver’s licence (min 1 year) and is comfortable navigating new roads.

    In addition, the candidate needs to fit into the Siyavula team and the general working environment. This requires the candidate to:

    • be comfortable working in teams;

    • be comfortable working in a startup environment;

    • demonstrate a willingness to participate in group work, including strategy discussions if required;

    • be passionate about improving education both locally and globally and the use of technology; and

    • embrace transparency and openness as a general operating procedure.

    Salary

    R12 000 - R14 000 depending on experience.
