    Senior Civil Engineer/ Section Manager

    This is an exciting opportunity for a talented and energized Senior Civil Engineer/ Section Manager (Pavement and Roads Design) to join a leading infrastructure consultancy and contribute to the growth and development of a business with a reputation for technical excellence and strong client relationships. We are looking for a Senior Civil Engineer with management experience and looking to make a career move into a managerial role or candidates already in a managerial role and managing a team.
    Reports To

    • Function Manager or any other person appointed to supervise him/her from time to time.

    Primary Position Purpose

    • This position is responsible for project acquisition, project management, financial management and delivery and technical design of all projects within the Section, including the management of staff within the group to ensure full utilisation and achievement of project milestones.

    Key Responsibilities

    • With a minimum of 5 - 10 years of practical experience in the design of Roads and Pavements , some of the key responsibilities are:
    •  Must be able to carry out pavement and rehabilitation assessments, including processing and interpretation of data (FWD, DCP, IRI, Visuals etc.)
    •  Be able to carry out Visual Inspections according to TMH 9 and TRH 6
    •  Have significant experience in pavement and rehabilitation design and documentation
    •  Have Road Construction Site experience
    •  Must be able to contribute pragmatically in related technical discussions
    •  Market development and proactive approach in developing work or being aware of what projects are likely to come up from clients – generating repeat business
    •  Assisting the Function Manager in developing business strategies for the section in conjunction with the Functional Group’s Business Plan and objectives
    •  Developing and maintaining existing key client relationships and maintaining client satisfaction
    •  Submission of tenders, EOIs and proposals for the section and providing input into large infrastructure projects as required in line with Instrument of Delegation
    •  Winning and delivering projects for the section
    •  Ensuring projects within the section are completed on time and on budget
    •  Ensuring appropriate technical standards, and Quality Assurance Management System requirements are maintained on projects
    •  Monitoring staff utilisation levels and ensuring staff are fully utilised
    •  Ensuring projects are adequately resourced in terms of numbers, capabilities and specialists
    •  Establishing and maintaining internal contacts within SMEC South Africa to source the appropriate skills
    •  Development of staff - this includes keeping them informed, providing suitable training, mentoring, suitable opportunities, planning career paths, maintaining professional ethics and professional standards of behaviour
    •  Managing or being part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver project milestones
    •  Maintaining professional development and remaining abreast of advances in chosen technical field

    Recommended Qualifications, Skills and Experience

    •  Bachelor of Engineering degree from an accredited University
    •  Professional Engineer registration with ECSA
    •  5 - 10 years of practical experience in the Construction and Pavements discipline, experience in Pavements and Roads design
    •  Experience in a management position would be preferred
    •  Experience in design using appropriate software, documentation and delivery of major projects involving related civil design
    •  Experience in management of large civil design projects involving small teams of civil designers and CAD operators
    •  Experience in Government standards, codes and documentation
    •  Knowledge of web-based project cost control and financial systems (BST)
    •  Ability to maintain a consistent and manageable workload
