    Senior Lecturer (Molecular Parasitology) - Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases

    Responsibilities

    The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

    • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in molecular biology;
    • Rendering community and other services to farmers, the veterinary profession; industry and other clients as required;
    • Postgraduate training and supervision where appropriate;
    • Research and publications in scientific journals;
    • Networking with relevant stakeholders;
    • Community engagement;
    • Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
    • Academic self-development.
       

    Minimum Requirements

    For candidates with a veterinary qualification:

    • A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or an equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
    • An appropriate Master’s degree with demonstrable molecular parasitology expertise, and commitment to register for a PhD;
    • Registration (or registrable) as a Veterinarian with SAVC;
    • Evidence of teaching experience at a professional or tertiary level;
    • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the Senior Lecturer level; and
    • Demonstrate strong potential to become an established specialist researcher in an academic environment.
       

    For Candidates Without a Veterinary Qualification

    • PhD degree in Veterinary Parasitology with experience in molecular biology;
    • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the Senior Lecturer level; and
    • At least 3 – 5 publications in high impact journals over the past five years as first or senior author.
       

    Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge And Behavioural Attributes)

    • Proven competencies in big data mining and analysis;
    • Proven competence in molecular parasitology and research project design;
    • The ability to critically evaluate and interpret experimental results and articulate key findings within cross-functional teams
    • Research profile appropriate to the position;
    • Good language and communication skills (written and verbal comprehension and verbal expression); and
    • Generic teaching competence such as communication and presentation, word-processing, spreadsheets and social networking skills.
       

    Added Advantages And Preferences

    • Familiar with major NGS technologies, platforms and applications;
    • Practical experience with NGS and PCR based methodologies;
    • Experience in NGS data handling and interpretation;
    • De novo product or assay development;
    • Experience in genome sequencing and annotation;
    • National and some international acknowledgement of academic standing and leadership in the relevant academic discipline;
    • Evidence in sourcing or obtaining research funds;
    • Evidence of ongoing and / or successful post graduate supervision;
    • Evidence of participation in relevant academic or professional organisations/bodies;
    • Presentation at scientific and/or professional congresses at national and/or international level; and
    • Evidence of national and international scientific collaborations.
