    SHERQ Manager

    Provide advisory services and controls the key responsibilities relating to the SHERQ function encompassing Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Quality and Food Safety for the Komati Sugar Mill through input and alignment of plans, programmes and systems in accordance with the Groups strategies or policies and the relevant legislative prescripts and managing compliance, investigative processes, the implementation of corrective action and the management and statutory reporting requirements.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • A three-year tertiary qualification in Quality Management or Environmental Sciences or Risk Management
    • Valid Code EB Drivers’ license
    • 5 years’ experience in the management and implementation of SHERQ systems and controls in a food manufacturing environment
    • Relevant OSHAct, SABS, NEMA, ISO, and FSSC experience

    Duties & Responsibilities:

    Aligning Requirements to Support Group Strategy:

    • Interpreting the Group requirements and presenting the key responsibilities and deliverables during forward planning sessions.
    • Forecasting financial resourcing provisions for inclusion in the departmental business plans.
    • Preparing consulting specifications and briefs to guide appointment and the scope of work of service providers relating to Safety, Health, Risk, Environment and Quality and Food Safety.
    • Reviewing procedures, systems, risk profiles and other related standards (i.e. SHE, Quality and Food Safety) with a view to identifying and implementing changes in accordance with the Group guidelines

    Integrated Management System:

    • Benchmarking SHERQFS activities against other food industries and implementing changes to the processes and the information management and reporting structure of the system
    • Overseeing the management of the information system databases and its integration into the business system to enable access of the information by the different functional areas.
    • Interrogating, manipulating and merging complex sets of data to enable relationships and variations between the different variables to be evaluated and reported.
    • Engaging and following up the measures and actions that need prioritization and action by the line department to ensure compliance with Food Safety, Health, Quality, Risk and Environmental group guidelines and legislative prescripts.
    • Providing an advisory service to line departments on the interpretation and application of SHERQFS information and responsibilities of the functional area relating to action/ interventions.

    Maintaining Compliance:

    • Identifying and rectifying deviations or reviewing the structure of the Business Management System at the Komati Mill to conform to relevant ISO and industry standards and requirements.
    • Scheduling and executing environmental, health, safety, quality, food safety, ethical and risk audits and interpreting findings against standards and legislation with a view to establishing and evaluating the state of the Mill.
    • Overseeing the external audit processes and risk studies and analysing or evaluating findings and the applicability of opinions in relation to the identified risks or variations observed in safety, health, environmental risk, food safety and quality standards against the broader business/ Group practices.
    • Initiating and leading investigations into serious breaches to the codes, rules or standards relating to Food Safety, preservation of the environment, quality, risk and Health and Safety and studying, developing and seeking approval of the guidelines to manage, mitigate or reduce the impact or further deviations.
    • Overseeing the implementation of corrective/ remedial measures relating to Health, Safety, Quality, Food Safety, Environment or Risk and conducting evaluations of the effects/ results on the broader business performance.

    Safety and Health:

    • Briefing management and other stakeholders of the scope and content of programmes and interventions agreed at a Group level to address deviations or awareness and compliance.
    • Monitoring the implementation and intervening and clarifying key responsibilities and/ or providing guidance and guidelines on the approach and steps of the implementation.
    • Managing the training programme content and the training of employees and contractors on site safety and health requirements in terms of code of conduct and other related rules.
    • Controlling the process of registering, certifying or licensing users of machinery and equipment or, overseeing and monitoring regulations in relation to “safe work practices”.
    • Managing the information updating, consolidation, analysis and reporting requirements (i.e. statutory timelines for submission of information and management reporting framework).
    • Leading and managing pandemic control measures in accordance with Group guidelines and measures.

    Quality Assurance:

    • Leading the implementation of Quality Assurance programmes across various organisational processes.
    • Leading / facilitating investigations and overseeing the implementation of corrective measures with respect to deviations from regulations, standards or procedures.
    • Facilitating / Leading the systems and processes involved with receiving, investigating and responding to customer/ consumer complaints.
    • Managing the information updating, consolidation, analysis and reporting requirements (i.e. management reporting framework).

    Environment Management:

    • Developing or aligning plans to accommodate statutory provisions in relation to practices and procedures.
    • Managing the process associated with the acquisition of licenses in accordance with the Act for water quality and atmospheric emissions.
    • Overseeing conformance with procedures and systems to manage waste collection and disposal.
    • Evaluating the impact of proposed internal changes to the operations on the environment and providing comments and guidelines.
    • Monitoring current trends and intervening, investigating and addressing environmental impact through the provision of procedures and corrective measures.
    • Managing the information updating, consolidation, analysis and reporting requirements (i.e. statutory information submission and management reporting framework).

    Risk Management:

    • Contributing to the development or improvement and maintenance of systems/ software enhancement and upgrades to ensure the Risk Management framework is adhered to
    • Coordinating the set-up and implementation of a Risk Committee to identify, analyse, quantify, prioritize and monitor risks within the responsible area.
    • Provide risk support services and engage with management on completion of Risk Registers.
    • Coordination and reporting on the progress with regards to risk and insurance findings (i.e. Opportunities for improvement, Infra-red inspections and others)
    • Controlling the application and monitoring the effectiveness of risk avoidance strategies to reduce and/ or remove the exposure or presence of risks.
    • Facilitating or initiating and leading investigations into the occurrence of risks to establish the cause and guiding implementation of corrective action/ remedial measures.
    • Managing the information updating, consolidation, analysis and Group Risk reporting requirements.

    Programme/ Project Management:

    • Develop, implement and manage the annual SHERQFS strategy for the site.
    • Briefing project teams on the specifications, deliverables and milestones.
    • Monitoring project/ programme phases against deliverables and specifications and intervening and resolving bottlenecks/ deviations.
    • Analysing interim and final project/ programme reports and conducting post evaluation exercises to determine the impact/ effects and results.

    Relationship Management:

    • Participating in forums or management structures of the Mill, engaging in discussions and providing guidance and comments in respect of activities and proposed courses of action to address critical statutory responsibilities or obligations and conformance to the standards of the business.
    • Coordinating the implementation of communication mediums (e.g. Health and Safety Committees, Risk Committees, QFS Committees etc.) to serve as an avenue to facilitate exchange of functional information.
    • Responding to enquiries and/ or queries through the collection of factual information and/ or facilitating / leading the necessary investigation/ research to consolidate information and substantiate findings.
    • Managing and coordinating the Garden Services and Interwaste contracts
