    Software Developer: Cybersecurity

    About The Job

    The CSIR has a vacancy for a Software Developer: Cybersecurity in the Information and Cybersecurity Centre with in the Defence and Security Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for researching, designing, developing and evaluating cybersecurity systems and applications using a variety of technologies and programming languages. The incumbent will further be responsible for administration, configuration and maintenance of different cybersecurity systems, and tools in line with various technical Research and Development (R&D) projects . The position is based in Pretoria.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Design and development of secure software applications and components for internal projects, technology demonstrators, and solutions for clients;
    • Define and solve problems with internal and external clients as well as subject matter experts in ICT and cybersecurity space;
    • Administer, maintain and configure information and networking systems;
    • Conduct R&D on related aspects of software and network security;
    • Pro-actively research technologies to improve team and systems innovation, processes and productivity;
    • Present and publish R&D initiatives in local and international forums;
    • Lead documentation efforts of solutions through technical documentation, code comments and clear code;
    • Lead small technical teams in the various stages of the full software development life cycle; but also strongly focus on software development;
    • Contribute to the assessment and audits of cybersecurity technologies;
    • Contribute to risk assessments and gap analysis in the cybersecurity environments;
    • Compile research findings, reports and other documentation, for delivery to clients and for internal use;
    • Identify and drive new business opportunities;
    • Mentor and coach junior staff.

    Qualifications, Skills And Experience

    • A Bachelor’s degree or an Advanced Diploma in information technology, computer science, computer systems engineering or related fields, with at least three years’ working experience in software development / information security, of which one year should be working in diverse technical R&D projects;
    • An Honours or a Master’s degree in information technology, computer science or related fields will be advantageous;
    • Experience in applying relevant cybersecurity knowledge to develop subsystems or part of overall systems/solutions/products;
    • Experience and knowledge in Networking and Server Administration;
    • Experience in the following is essential:
      • Software Engineering Principles
      • Software Development
      • Cyber Security/Information Security
    • Proficiency in and/or adaptability to other Programming Languages (e.g. C#, PHP, Java, Python, JavaScript, SQL);
    • Knowledge and experience in Windows and Linux based development;
    • Knowledge and experience in Mobile apps development;
    • Technical report writing skills and ability to produce technical reports;
    • Ability to operate with little supervision;
    • Ability to support new avenues of knowledge application in the research group;
    • Ability to participate in internal project teams;
    • Clear understanding of own career plan;
    • Ability to execute straightforward instructions from both internal and external stakeholders.
