The Cape Town based Development Center plays a key role in building the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Amazon's in-the-cloud infrastructure service that is pioneering cloud computing by providing scalable, pay-as-you-use compute capacity. Customers have complete control over their compute resources, supported by Amazon's proven infrastructure and services. We are expanding the team to grow our feature set, but also to manage increasing scale in capacity and global footprint.

Your Work Will Be
The ideal candidate will be clearly passionate about hypervisors and virtualization, and the large opportunity that Amazon EC2 presents. You’ll have significant impact on our core virtualization systems which our customers rely on. You will be building innovative new functionality in EC2’s virtualization systems, as well as improvements to existing components.

• Deep in the Linux kernel, in the virtualization modules, resource management systems and devices
• Developing the user space virtual machine monitor and device emulation
• Enhancements and new functionality for guest operating systems
   

Basic Qualifications

• Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent working experience
• 5+ years of industry experience in a software development environment
• Strong Computer Science fundamentals, including data structures, object-oriented design, algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis.
• Proficiency in at least one modern programming language, such as Java, C#, Python, Javascript, Scala, Kotlin
   

Preferred Qualifications
The following will help support a successful application:

• In-depth experience with low-level languages such as C or C++
• Strong analytical skills with problem solving abilities
• Strong desire to build, sense of ownership, urgency, and drive
• Deep interest in solving challenges of high availability and scale
• Proficient in at least one CPU architecture, either x86 or ARM
• Experience in developing and using virtualization technologies, such as KVM or Xen, both from kernel and user space
• Experience with development in the Linux kernel, drivers or modules, toolsets and build ecosystems (such as make and GCC)
• Knowledge of Python or similar scripting/automations languages an advantage
• Experience in CI and testing automation such as Koji
• Demonstrated capability for innovation and driving innovative thinking
• Demonstrated leadership of a highly successful team against changing priorities and requirements
