    Senior Designer

    Job description

    Job Summary

    As a Senior Designer, you will be part of the Industrial Automation Division and Process Industries Business Units (BU) based in Modderfontein. ABB is the World leader in Industrial Automation (IA) division delivers integrated solutions for control, plant optimization, and industry-specific application knowledge and services to help process industry customers worldwide to meet their critical business needs in the areas of operational profitability, capital productivity, risk management and global responsibility. These industries include oil and gas, power, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, metals, cement, minerals, marine and turbocharging.

    Tasks

    As a Senior Designer you will be responsible to create, modify and analyze the design of equipment, systems or installations, including specifications for manufacturing, fabrication or construction on assignments of medium to high complexity using established solutions. Your tasks as a Senior Designer will include the following:

    Technical contribution:

    • Acts as lead designer
    • Ensures creation of customized designs with high priority on identification and control of hazards.
    • Contributes to design reviews and verification following established QA/QC process, provides feedback on design aspects and makes necessary modifications.
    • Optimizes designs to meet updated standards, incorporating new products, components and functionalities.
    • Creates or reviews engineering drawings, specifications and plans required by manufacturing, fabrication or construction.

    Contract Management

    Identifies and implements variation requests to support contract claims.

    Planning and control

    Creates work plans and cost estimates for work in one’s area of responsibility and ensures quality deliverables on time and at targeted cost.

    Risk and opportunity management:

    Completes risk and opportunity assessments and the implementation of resulting actions in one’s area of responsibility. Reports any contract/quality/program/cost issues to management, along with recommendations, for resolution.

    Customer:

    Interacts with customers and provides technical guidance on design related queries.

    Supply chain management:

    Collaborates with the supply chain function, reviews vendor documentation, prepares RFQs, and provides design related evaluation of proposals for non-standard materials and equipment.

    Technical leadership and knowledge sharing:

    Shares knowledge and experience across own business unit and beyond. 2.Attends project meetings and presents specific aspects of project design assignments.

    Processes and tools:

    • Creates standard processes an: tools to promote the reuse of technical solutions.
      People leadership and development:
    • Coaches less experienced designers on the translation of conceptual designs to engineering documentation, including drawings and calculations.
    • May manage a small team of designers on a project.

    General:

    • Assisting the sales departments with technical aspects (both product and process related) during the preparation of tenders.
    • Providing training and support to personnel in the Training, Service and Engineering departments.
    • Provide sound engineering and design input to projects and service by following QA procedures.
    • The compiling of a Functional Specification and participation in clarification meetings to ensure that the project is run on sound engineering principles and executed in accordance with specifications.
    • Arrange and participate in the design, Manufacturing, Commissioning and Site Acceptance Test (SAT).
    • Make the project team aware, implement and comply with the company Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality Systems and procedures.
    • To keep themselves abreast with developments in technology within ABB and within the hoisting industry. 8.Oversee design and construction of electrical panels.
    • Conduct formal risk review meetings and document results for client’s presentation.

    Requirements

    • Ideally you must have a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or S4 Qualification coupled with 10 years’ experience in Electrical Engineering.
    • You should have knowledge of electrical applications, systems in HPR’s, automation systems, MCC’s, drives & switchgear and be well-versed in designing, problem solving techniques, commitment towards excellence at work and professional attitude.
    • Candidates with ECSA Certification will be preferred.
