    Lead Engineer

    Job description

    Management Responsibilities:

    • The Lead Discipline Engineer is responsible for executing and managing all discipline engineering and design office activities for Projects in the Department
    • The Lead Discipline Engineer needs to ensure that:
    • The Lead Discipline Engineer needs to ensure that the Discipline’s work is carried out according to Company procedures, noting that these may be modified for special Projects subject to prior approval
    • Participate in setting the Project Scope definition, design criteria, budgets and schedule
    • Manage scope and other changes in accordance with the change control procedures
    • Issue progress, control and technical issue reports to the Project Managers and Technical Manager monthly, and as may be required
    • Pro-actively maintain information flow between the discipline, other engineering disciplines, the Client, procurement and construction site, suppliers and contractors as required for discipline needs and overall project co-ordination
    • At all times, be responsive to the needs of other disciplines

    Administrative Responsibilities:

    • Ensure that all discipline documentation is prepared, circulated, approved, transmitted and filed in accordance with procedures.
    • Ensure that Company Administrative Procedures are implemented in terms of discipline timesheets, leave approval, financial control etc

    Technical Responsibilities:

    • Execute engineering design relating to discipline works on Projects.
    • Take responsibility for the technical quality of the Discipline’s work. This includes responsibility for ensuring that designs are safe.
    • Approve all drawings, specifications, requisitions, calculations and reports issued by the Discipline.

    Key Performance Indicators:

    • Produces designs which are cost effective and fulfil the Client’s Technical Objectives
    • Sets up task man-hour budgets and schedules, which are demanding but realistic. Ensures that the needs of other disciplines are adequately addressed in this budget.
    • Controls all discipline work strictly according to budget and schedule. This applies to both discipline man-hours and direct field costs. Identifies and manages all changes quickly and effectively according to change control procedures.
    • Carries out detail design work and technical procurement work with high accuracy and ensure the absence of any errors in critical issues.
    • Ensures that all engineering decisions include adequate consideration of effects on cost and schedule as well as technical issues, and that all affected disciplines are consulted.
    • Overviews the work of the Project Procurement, inspection and construction functions, with regard to the discipline’s objectives are met.
    • Keeps adequate technical records and ensures that all documentation is checked and signed as per procedures.
    • Manages the discipline’s resources and creates a high standard of teamwork with other disciplines.
    • Maintains communication with the Project Managers and Technical Manager and obtains their input whenever required, and specifically for critical items or when new or unusual designs are considered.

    Experience Required:

    • 10 or more Years design experience on Process Related Projects
    • Discipline Engineering work relating to Process Plants, including studies, basic engineering, detailed engineering, construction supervision and commissioning
    • Must have good attention to detail and quality of work (meticulous)
    • Able to manage a team of technical people
    • Ability to manage Clients, Suppliers and Contractors

     

    Minimum Qualifications and Professional Registrations:

    • BTech/B Eng/ B Eng (Discipline)
    • ECSA Pr.Eng / Pr Tech. Eng.
