    Fibre Optic Specialist

    Job description

    Tellumat provides innovative technology, services and solutions in ICT, Defence, Energy, and Transport. We require the services of a Fibre Specialist position in the Tellumat Integrated Solutions division.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Grade 12 with relevant certificates/qualifications.
    • Fibre Floating & D.I.T (tests on: 2, 4, 7, 12 & 50mm ducts) – minimum 3 years’ experience
    • Fibre Splicing & OTDR Testing

    Key responsibilities

    • Installation of new fibre optic circuits.
    • Planning of new fibre optic circuits on the CORE DWDM networks.
    • Testing of fibre optic cables and links.
    • Perform fault finding and fault handover on fibre circuits
    • Assist the planning department
    • Checking planning prior to implementing for best solutions.
    • Making suggestion on best practices and cost saving solutions.
    • Site supervision
    • Maintain core fibre networks
    • Optic fibre termination and patching
    • Use of optic network monitoring systems and the use of GIS enabled infrastructure management systems.
    • Testing of optic fibres cables and compiling reports based on these results.
    • Responsible for performing site audits and updating records
    • Liaise with customers and 3rd party vendors to ensure that the work performed is in line with requirements and policies
    • Interacting with 3rd party vendors to ensure that development projects comply with Tellumat requirements and relevant IT policies;
    • Liaising with IT architects, application developers, contractors and staff to communicate technical requirements and business requirements for all aspects of the provision of telecommunications services.
    • Ensure that all stakeholders are made aware of all overall relevant technical requirements involved in Tellumat IT / telecommunications infrastructural and services development initiatives.
    • Training of new staff and contractors
    • Compiling documentation to conform to a standard As-Built document
    • Meeting with the Network Architect to advise and highlight issues with plans, that no one else want to address.
    • Ensuring that new builds conform to standards and doing final acceptance
    • Planning and implementing proper solutions
    • Q&A on contractor work and signing off once all work done
    • Liaising with vendors on new developments
    • Negotiating with vendors on best solutions
    • Requesting quotes from various vendors
    • Building relationships with other departments
    • Assisting on radio infrastructure, maintenance and fault finding.
    • Meeting with clients and other service provider’s architects to ensure that all parties involved benefits from projects going forward and also making recommendations on how to improve their infrastructure.
    • Stock control on stock that is kept for emergency repairs.
    • Tracking progress on new and existing projects.
    • Assisting on radio faults when required.
    • Supervise over contractors and fibre team to ensure that all deadlines and commitments made by management are met.
    • Resolve staff issues before issues are escalated to management
    • Fault finding and assisting various departments with network related issues
    • Technical lead in complex network projects and maintenance projects
    • Issuing of instructions and ensuring that the instructions are fulfilled by external contractors
    • Quality Assurance on all work completed and handed over
    • Provide high level technical assistance when required by other departments
    • Compiling of basic training / induction material
    • Assist management with basic feedback with regards to tenders (Maintenance) and budget requirements for each financial year.
    • Compiling and checking of as-built documentation on work completed by Operations
    • Providing details and assistance with regards to a maintenance plan
    • Ensuring that records are kept up to date and verify records
