    Development Lead - L&H Actuarial Modelling

    About The Role

    The Modelling Center of Excellence (MCoE) is responsible for the development, maintenance and on-going support of the MoSes modelling platform, used by Swiss Re Reinsurance L&H for pricing, financial reporting and business steering. The model is used in a number of locations spanning the UK, Europe, Latin America, South Africa, Asia and Australia.

    Reporting to the Head of the MCoE who is based in London, you will lead the MCoE Development Team comprising of 3 or more members. This is a very exciting opportunity for a skilled senior actuarial software developer to join the Life & Health Business Management division, which is responsible for the inforce management of Swiss Re's global L&H Reinsurance business. You will ensure the continued smooth functioning of the MCoE Development team, with delivery that exceeds stakeholder's expectations

    Core Responsibilities

    • Lead the MCoE Development Team. Ensure specifications received from the MCoE Business Analyst Team are translated into detailed technical specifications and implemented into the MoSes models in a controlled, auditable and robust manner. Collaborate with the MCoE Lead Business Analyst, Architect, and Testing Lead to steer the prioritisation of work requests, change requests, bug fixes, performance issues, issue resolution, risk management, and to recommend solutions that provide the most effective results for the business. Other responsibilities include:
    • Dotted line management of a team of developers over different locations, to maximise quality, effectiveness of development tasks, and unit tests of actuarial MoSes models
    • Own the overall development of tasks implemented into the MoSes actuarial models, creation of detailed technical specifications, development deliverables, unit testing, release notes and management reporting dashboards to the Head of MCoE
    • Work closely with the MCoE Business Analyst Lead to ensure that the functional requirements received from the Business Analyst team are effectively translated into detailed and accurate technical specifications. Review and ensure changes made to the MoSes models by the development team are accurate, efficient and robust
    • Review and signoff output from the developers within the team, ensure changes are clearly documented within the code, code standards are being met and that the code structure is scalable
    • Ownership for the creation, maintenance and continual improvement of the coding standards and quality control procedures. Ensure the development team complies with the specified coding standards and quality control procedures
    • Provide support to the Business Analyst Team, Team Architect and Testing Team to help resolve issues within the model through debugging, unit testing and knowledge sharing as required
    • Own and maintain all documentation assigned to the MCoE Development Team
    • Continually strive to increase the skills and knowledge of the MCoE development team, and seek constant improvements to the processes and procedures under your management
    • Training, directing, mentoring, and proactively managing the career development of the development team members

    About You

    • Highly skilled actuarial C++ software developer with at least 5+ years of experience developing complex applications ideally in the insurance/actuarial industry
    • Proven track record of leading development projects and/or a small development team in the insurance / reinsurance industries
    • Exposure to the MoSes and Risk Agility MoSes platform is definite advantage, but other financial model development experience could also be considered
    • Part qualified / qualified actuary preferred but is not a prerequisite if extensive experience as an actuarial valuations software developer can be demonstrated
    • Proficiency in Programming in C++, VBA, FoxPro, SQL
    • Excellent organisational and analytical skills with attention to detail – able to quickly absorb details on business structure, product features and model requirements.
    • Experienced in the production of detailed technical specifications
    • Working knowledge of project management, quality assurance and testing methodologies
    • Good communication, both written and verbal, with an ability to work with other MCoE team members in multiple locations
    • Cross cultural experience working with colleagues globally
    • Proficiency in working in MS Project, Excel, and other spreadsheet and database packages
    • Ability to identify complex problems, find innovate solutions and translate this into software solutions within the modelling platform
    • Experienced in the production of quality documentation and software development
    • Ability to work independently, accurately and deliver to deadlines
    • Shows initiative in identifying issues and supporting other team members, peers and senior stakeholders
    • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise tasks accordingly
