    Materials Scientist

    Job Description

    The Role

    This exciting role manages one or more customer focused delivery projects and other activities involving integration of aspects of Materials Science and Technology similar to own area of expertise, in order to support Business Unit R&D Programmes and uses the results of these to assist in developing new products and improving production capabilities.

    The duties of this role will include but are not limited to;

    • Setting of NPI and development operational plans and schedules and associated Innovation projects with primary focus on short term activities.
    • Monitor the supply chain, and ensure material is supplied to spec and requirement within deadlines.
    • Manages product, process and technology transfer from Group Innovation Centre (UK) to Node development (SA) and finally into production (SA).
    • Manages Capsule Preparation, System Component Manufacture, Synthesis
    • Uses process information generated to support production troubleshooting by giving presentations, troubleshooting the use of synthesising technologies and recommending new or modified synthesising routes for different situations.
    • Participate hands on with assembly and manufacture of required material, and develop innovative means to improve on current technologies applied.
    • Uses Materials Science and Technology understanding of processing-to-structure links to support Research, Development, Processing and Production. Also guides the application of these links and models to solve problems and answer queries about the processing and resulting structure and behaviour of our products.
    • Develops and presents new technologies (materials preparation, synthesis and post-synthesis processing) in line with BU technology roadmaps in support of Manufacturing and R&D.
    • Provides model-based inputs to assist with production yield and quality improvement initiatives.
    • Uses process information generated to support production troubleshooting
    • Knowledge Management by using all appropriate group KM systems

    Skills required:

    • Masters in Materials Science (Ceramics, Chemistry or Physics)
    • At least 2 years’ working experience in a relevant field of science and technology at a recognised establishment
    • Good understanding of company specific products along with a grasp of basic underlying materials science and technology, deployment in applications, manufacture, properties, characteristics, processing.
