    R&D Operator

    Role Context

    • Adherence to the shift production plan
    • Accountable and responsible for the safe achievement of metallurgical targets in the section
    • Execute and control the physical operational work in the section
    • Optimize efficiency and recoveries to produce quality products that meet the required specifications
    • Liaise with junior metallurgist with regard to process variables changes in the section
    • Process control within defined recipe
    • Coach and instruct to explain how the work should be performed, focusing on improving, changing and optimizing practices
    • Record and analyse stoppages and equipment
    • Primary focus is on effective and safe operation of the section to optimize efficiencies and recoveries and maintain quality of produced products
    • Participate on root cause analysis process
    • Ensure adherence to all safety (i.e. create awareness of hazards and behavior)
    • Correct non-compliance to objectives and safety standards
    • Comply to safety rules, policies and procedures
    • Completion of necessary documents (i.e. Risk assessments, inspection sheets, job cards, etc.)
    • Contribute in pre-shift safety and work discussions
    • Creating conducive employee relations climate in the team
    • Adherence to the shift plan
    • Adherence to agreed process parameters for the efficient operation achievement of project targets
    • Assist with conducting of planned task observations on process attendants
    • Communicate failures/breakdowns and deviations in process or equipment to the Junior Metallurgist
    • Assist support services during breakdowns in order to limit downtime while ensuring adherence to safety standards
    • Ensures quality test-work (Projects) are executed
    • Conduct sample preparation as per standard and safe procedure

    • Grade 12/ NQF Level 4
    • NQF 4-5 Skills Programme
    • MET-Skill Level 4

    Job specific experience

    • One year’ experience as an Operator in a metallurgical Furnace Operation including foundry and minerals processing experience.

    Engineering Foreman

    Role Context

    Operational Management

    • Oversee subordinates, coordinate, and carry out proactive and reactive maintenance in the workplace to ensure equipment availability and safe production continuity and legal compliance.
    • Legal responsibility in terms of 2.9.2 appointment of the MHSA.
    • Cost management and control.
    • Working knowledge of implementing maintenance strategies and root cause analysis and RCM principles.
    • Working knowledge of SHEQ standards and legislation.
    • Supervise and inspect work in progress and upon completion to ensure compliance with project plans and specifications and acceptable work practices and workmanship.
    • Ensure that the workshop housekeeping and operating practices are of a high standard and that special tools and equipment is well maintained.
    • Develop and implement improvements where necessary.
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholder to ensure optimal performance.
    • Shareholder value Creation: Budget compilation and control, ensure that engineering strategies are aligned to optimize engineering costs, visit identified sites and plants to conduct Engineering process benchmarks.
    • Engage with Engineering leadership team and recommend benchmarked methods and techniques and attendance to identified engineering conferences and workshops
    • Obtain access to Engineering journals and intelligence to expand current knowledge and practice.
    • Safety, Health, Environment and Risk Control: Ensure compliance with Fatal Risk Control Protocols and SHEQ standards and legislation.
    • Participate in the divisional SHEQ management system and report all SHEQ incidents.
    • Organizational Learning and Development: Ensure skills training Identified to correct any shortcomings, all Artisan skills assessed and suitably trained.
    • Identify formal Engineering training and development required.
    • Conduct regular practical training and coaching sessions for artisans.
    • Maintain a training support function for the area of responsibility.
    • Engineering maintenance Control and improvement: Plan, organise, lead, and control artisans, apprentices and assistants in all maintenance activities.
    • Supervise and inspect work in progress and upon completion to ensure compliance with maintenance plans and specifications and acceptable work practices and workmanship.
    • Follow Standard Operating Procedures.
    • Realise, achieve, and maintain set standards, provide expert advice and guidance.
    • Ensure that the workshop housekeeping and operating practices are of a high standard and that tools and equipment is well maintained
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholder to ensure optimal performance.
    • Engineering Excellence: Optimize resources to ensure efficient and timely completion of the work.
    • Conduct risk assessments and hazard identification.
    • Development of maintenance plans for the equipment.
    • Plan and communicate staffing requirements.
    • Perform Root Cause Analysis.

    Resource Management

    • Provide input into required changes in resources (financial or non-financial) to enable the achievement of team and/or own objectives.
    • Determine resource needs of the team and/or own area of work to achieve business outcomes.
    • Request and allocate required assets and/or resources for the fulfilment of work objectives to guarantee quality outputs.
    • Monitor the use of assets and resources within the team and own area of responsibility, to ensure assets and resources are consistently and appropriately utilised and managed.
    • Provide staff with day-to-day direction and tasks aligned with Departmental procedures, to enable the usage of less resources more efficiently.
    • Manage team and support services including standby resources during breakdowns by communicating failures/breakdowns in process to limit downtime while adhering to safety standards.
    • Coordinate and manage the activities of the plant staff including equipment operators, maintenance technicians and general labourers in area of accountability to ensure resource management and adequate staffing for delivery.

    Stakeholder Relations

    • Communicate with all relevant Departments on issues of the area of speciality. Liaise across the relevant Departments by engaging with the appropriate stakeholders to ensure all stakeholders remain abreast of Departmental objectives, any potential derailers are appropriately managed and duplication of work is avoided.
    • Manage relationships and maintain effective communication channels with external stakeholders including suppliers and contractors to track and ensure timely delivery of materials, equipment and services required for mining operations.
    • Communicate with internal and/or external stakeholders, where required, to achieve work objectives and to maintain relationships.

    Compliance, Risk and Safety

    • Develop an appropriate plant specific Risk Management Policy and appropriate Procedures and Standards (Codes of Practice)
    • Develop and implement a proactive approach to all safety protocols by creating awareness of hazards and behaviour to enforce compliance to minimise risk of accidents and injuries within the mine.
    • Conduct regular safety inspections, provide relevant and necessary training to ensure all employees adhere to safety guidelines all the time.
    • Lead the interdepartmental collaboration and coordination efforts to execute drills and escape procedures in case of emergencies and operational requirements i.e. blasting to mitigate risks and fatalities.

    People Management

    • Create and maintain a conducive work environment by appropriately applying Human Resources policies and procedures to ensure optimum performance is realised for the benefit of the plant, by extension, the organisation.
    • Coach, mentor and train teams and recommend adequate training and skills development initiatives to improve employee performance.
    • Manage a high-performance culture for the mine by providing critical and timely feedback (both positive and critical), enabling individuals to improve and work as effectively as possible to meet operational goals.
    • Implement clear people management and supervisory tactics within the mine in line with TM’s people management strategies.
    • Lead the identification and development of talent by ensuring adequate staffing, providing regular mentoring, coaching and training to ensure a competent and capable workforce in line with TM’s people strategies.

    Requirements

    Qualifications:

    • Grade 12/N3
    • Studying towards National Diploma in Mechanical will be advantageous

    Certifications:

    • Trade Certificate – Diesel/Petrol Mechanic
    • Supervisor / Foreman Certificate

    Job-specific experience:

    • At least 5 years’ experience as Artisan in Open Cast Mining Operations.
    • Drill rig experience especially for Sandvik Dp1500 and Epiroc Dm30 will be preferred
    • AMT PM and MM experience will be advantageous.
    • Valid medical certificate. (Red ticket).
    • Valid driver’s license.
    • Experience/Exposure on MS Dynamics F&O, Reporting tools: MS Power BI
