    Safety Manager

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

    • To devise and implement a risk management system to minimise risk exposure through policies, procedures and safe work practices. To facilitate and conduct audits to measure compliance and implement initiatives to address shortcomings.     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

    • Degree or Diploma specialising in safety, engineering or mining.
    • Valid blasting certificate would be an advantage.
    • 6 years’ experience within a safety environment.
    • 6-year experience in mining/production at an equivalent level.
    • 2 years’ experience as a Chief Safety Officer.
    • Good knowledge of work-related hazards and associated risks.
    • Experience in leading investigation processes, ICAM will be an advantage.
    • Knowledge of mining processes.
    • Experience in ISO system implementation and auditing.
    • Good knowledge of standards & procedures, Risk Management Framework, SHEQ policies and Codes of Practice would be advantageous.
    • Relevant safety legislation, i.e. Mine Health and Safety Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and COID Act is essential.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Computer literacy (MS Office package).
    • Must have facilitation,report writing skills,auditing and presentation skills.
    • Valid Medical Certificate, or medically fit in order to obtain such a certificate

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:

    • Measure compliance to the Mine Health and Safety Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Impala policies and procedures to manage risk (safety) in the workplace in accordance with the intervals as specified by above Acts.
    • Compile budgets and manage cost to ensure that expenses are within approved budget parameters.
    • Facilitate and manage peer reviews (group audits) on fatal risk control exposure and measure remedial action plan compliance to reduce serious incidents.
    • Report on safety statistics and analysis of trends to management to ensure sufficient availability of information so that appropriate initiatives can be put in place and performance are measured.
    • Report all occupational injuries, company organised sport injuries and commuter (to and from work) injuries to Rand Mutual for compensation and claims processing.
    • Conduct Root Cause Analysis of all serious incidents and participate to implement remedial actions that will prevent repeat accidents.
    • Determine the risk exposure and formulate management action plans to mitigate the risk and incorporate management risk plans into standards and safe-work procedures.
    • Staff the department in alignment with company policies and EE objectives, and ensure competency and performance management of safety staff in order to meet departmental objectives.
