    Research

    • Gathering information regarding issues.
    • Determining the angle of story, identifying and minimising gaps within the news story.
    • Brainstorming the show during pre-production meetings.
    • Offering constructive feedback and ideas for the following day’s broadcast
    • Staying abreast of current affairs in order to be ready for breaking and developing stories.
    • Suggesting guests who offer varied views to topics.

    Scripting

    • Writing scripts for interviews and packages.
    • Checking existing scripts for grammatical, factual and stylistic errors.
    • Updating scripts and headlines with new information.

    Anchoring

    • Anchor news shows and field anchoring
    • Chairing studio panel debates
    • Ad-libbing to live visuals during breaking stories

    Interviewing / Presenting

    • Reading bulletins to acceptable broadcast standards.
    • Liase with news producers to get a run down on planned interviews and live crossings.
    • Moving between hard news and lighter news on social media
    • Conducting live and pre-recorded  interviews
    • Forming and expressing opinions based on fact
    • Engaging with the e.tv news audience and newsmakers.
    • Adlibing rolling news.

    Social Media

    • Promoting shows and live news events, in accordance to the organisation’s social media policies.
    • Promoting viewer engagement via social media
    • Reflecting the comments streaming in to the show
    • Keeping abreast of topics that are trending
    • Promoting the brand on social media in a positive way that drives viewers

    Requirements

    • A Degree in Journalism
    • A minimum of 5 years' experience within a similar role

    Programme Editor

    Key Performance Area

    Management, Interpersonal and Team Facilitation

    • Recruiting, selecting and developing the relevant and appropriate resources
    • Proactively managing resources in terms of appropriate allocation of skills/competencies and productivity, including regularly monitoring of performance
    • Ensure the smooth creation and execution of all shifts, as per the relevant and appropriate legislation and Company
    • Ensure that the Team is aligned to all applicable and relevant policies, values and behaviours of the organisation

    • Building, supporting and maintaining healthy, diverse internal and external relationships with all relevant and applicable stakeholders to ensure achievement of organisational goals

    • Translating the strategy into an operational plan, where targets and performance measures are clear and aligned to the overall strategic direction/focus of the business

    • Continuously realign programming so that there is a agile, flexible culture of programming to continuously improve audience ratings, and where these can be easily identified by the performance statistics

    Team and Personal Development

    • Ensure that the skills/competencies and knowledge in the Team and Self remain up to date, current and relevant, including but not limited to current affairs and trends, and utilising credible and authentic sources of informance as is expected in the field of journalism
    • Proactive manage performance and delivery of the Team, and where necessary, timeously and regularly address poor/concerning work and developmental areas, ensuring that there are specific and reasonable timelines
    • Align to and promote all Company work practices and processes that monitor/assess performance and development

    Budget Compliance

    • Ensure that all decisions are aligned to budget expectations and that there is a focus on return on investment, efficiencies and effectiveness

    Content Generation, Broadcast Delivery and Editorial Leadership

    • Generate and produce well researched, accurate, balanced, comprehensive, impartial, appealing and audience focused programming
    • Ensure that content and coverage is consistent with the organisation’s editorial policies and compiles with all applicable legislation and regulations
    • Provide guidance on how best to capture stories/content by brainstorming both interviews and camera angles with the relevant resources
    • Provide clear editorial direction, ensuring appropriate planning research and editorial judgement for all/any breaking news
    • Facilitate and/or lead editorial meetings and propose ideas for current and future content based on the news cycle
    • Develop and maintain a forward planning diary, ensuring that a project plan captures expected deliverables and resourcing requirements
    • Taking the show to air
    • Ensuring that content is engaging for the audience with appropriate animation, slides and sound, info graphics and other media rich content to enhance the effectiveness
    • Lead discussions on guest requirements, ensuring that guests are approved as appropriate subject matter experts who are interesting, engaging and enhance the content framework
    • Lead pre and post programming meetings, ensuring that the Technical Operations and Editorial Teams are able to deliver programme requirements to the expected best practice and standards of the organisation
    • Manage on-air content, including the creation of straps and information that is informative and engaging
    • Take accountability for all final editorial decisions
    • Continuously review and offer feedback to the value chain, including Anchors, to ensure optimal performance and delivery of the content strategy

    Requirements

    • A National Diploma in Journalism
    • A minimum of 8 years' experience in Broadcast Journalism
    • A minimum of 3 years' experience in Management within a Broadcast environment

    Broadcast Producer

    Editorial

    • Takes the lead in pre-production meetings by suggesting story angles and treatment.
    • Ensures all content is continuously updated.
    • Assist in the writing of scripts, intros and headlines.
    • Create content for on-air such as packages.

    Communication

    • Assures critical liaison between Programme Editor and Assistant Programme Editor.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with all departments including Graphics, Input, Technical Operations, Logistics.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with team members.
    • Demonstrating leadership on a daily basis.

    Writing

    • Good knowledge of South African and global news.
    • Ability to write well including writing to visuals.
    • Ensure stories are accurate and unbiased by verifying all content.
    • Cutting of bytes and interviews and reuquesting appropriate visuals.

    Planning

    • Maintains overall control of the production process.
    • Plays a key role in pre-planning process at editorial meetings.
    • Provides proper input at debrief sessions.
    • Delegates and oversees duties to Producers and Guest Bookers.
    • Responsible for show specific forward planning.

    Research

    • Check electronic media, social media and articles of interest.

    Technical

    • Good understanding of newsroom operating systems.
    • Ability to lead a team.
    • Good inter-personal skills.
    • Ability to work under pressure in a breaking news environment.

    Requirements
