National Diploma in H&S Management or a similar qualification
4-5 years’ experience in the H&S environment
At least 3-4 years managerial experience
Experience in the management and implementation of SHE systems and auditing including accident and incident investigation
SAMTRAC, HIRA, OHS ACT and relevant ISO courses essential
Strong Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Safety
Ability to travel to countries on occasion for special projects as directed
Must be Computer literate, MS Office.
Roles & Responsibilities
Responsible for all aspects of occupational health and safety across the Continental enterprise including the health and safety of continental employees engaged in the company’s operations and support activities and the safe working of Continental’s contractor base across South Africa and the wider African region. Reports to the Executive Committee (CEO, COO, etc.) on safety matters across the enterprise.
Ensure that all Continental operations and sites are managed in a way that ensures compliance with all relevant national and local laws and regulations.
Provide accurate, detailed and timely reports to the executive committee that show clearly where Continental is compliant with safety law and policy and where it is not. In the latter case, provide clear plans and accountabilities for corrective and preventative action.
Develop and implement the Continental Safety Policy and Programme including the Safety Golden Rules, safety surveillance and compliance programmes, management of the safety system, including risk assessments, accident investigation and reporting.
Manage the Continental contractor base to ensure that they operate safely and in compliance with the Continental Safety Programme. Work with the Group Operations Manager to ensure that Continental contracts are placed with safety compliant contractors and that persistent safety delinquent contractors are removed from the approved contractor list.
Conduct risk assessments that are sufficient to identify safety hazards and ensure that improvement programmes are implemented to eliminate or mitigate safety risks.
Maintain and control the safety asset register ensuring that safety issues with assets are identified, recorded, risk prioritised and that corrective actions are implemented in a timely manner to eliminate or mitigate the risk.
Implement and manage a safety surveillance programme that ensures contractors are consistently working safely in accordance with the Golden Rules. Ensure that proper reward and penalties are applied to contractors in accordance with the programme.
Ensure the provision of appropriate training programmes and PPE for contactors and Continental employees. Maintain the Continental training matrix to ensure that all personnel and contractors have appropriate levels of safety training.
Ensure that accidents, near misses and other safety incidents are reported, investigated and that appropriate corrective and preventative actions are made as a result.Investigation should clearly identify both root and underlying causes and corrective actions should be deployed across the enterprise in a timely fashion.
