PHP Web Developer at Caxton Digital

Job description

Working as a PHP developer within the Digital Development team, to develop, deploy, maintain code for the Caxton Digital and other projects and services across the Caxton group. Focus will be enhancing services within the WordPress multisite environment supporting all Local News Network websites. You will be responsible for writing code to further develop Caxton online projects.

Main Responsibilities

Technical Delivery

• Maintain and evolve the code for the Caxton Title Sites (WordPress Multisite) and other supporting digital platforms.
• Design, develop and maintain software solutions for the Caxton Title Sites and other supporting digital platforms.
• Maintain database structures on all aspects of system integrations.
• Maintain data integrations, API’s and other components connected to the Caxton Title Sites, and other digital platforms.

Project Work

• Undertake projects as directed by the Digital Product Head
• Support the Caxton Title Sites and digital development process through collaborative working and agile development processes.
• Monitor work against the production schedule, provide updates to the Digital Product Head and report any technical difficulties.

Best Practice

• Participate in quality assurance as appropriate.
• Ensure the code base complies with best practice and to create a code library.
• Maintain awareness of best practice and trends in the wider digital sector.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Technical Skills

• Junior to Intermediate skills and experience to design and develop code, primarily PHP, for a range of platforms.
• A related certification in the field of programming or development.
• A solid understanding of the web’s three main principles: HTTP, URI and HTML.
• XML and XHTML to W3C standards.
• Knowledge of database systems (MySQL).
• WordPress custom plugin and Theme development.
• Familiarity with accessibility, usability and cross browser issues.
• Good working knowledge or transferable skills for some of the following:
• MySQL
• WordPress / Multisite
• jQuery, JavaScript (optional)
• Git, Bitbucket or equivalent version control
• HTML5 and CSS
• Photoshop
• A good understanding of Google Analytics and Google Apps
• Social media platforms and technologies
