    Head of Safety

    Job description

    Primary reporting :  VP SHE Enablement

    Location:                      Sandton         

    Purpose of Job / Role Intent:

    To enable, support and facilitate the safe and responsible execution of operations towards zero harm and sustainability through a proactive safety approach.

    Minimum Qualifications and Experience required

    • B.Tech/B.Sc:
    • Minimum of 7 years at previous layer;
    • 12 years total work experience

    or

    • B.Eng/BSc(Hons)/B.Com(Hons) :
    • Minimum of 4 years at previous layer;
    • 10 years total work experience

     

    Key accountabilities

    Input to Group SHE strategy

    • Provide inputs into the Group SHE strategy from a Safety perspective
    • Develop and review the Safety fundamentals, performance requirements, strategic focus areas and game plan in accordance with the 1S SHE EA.
    • Provide input to objectives and target setting process regarding Group targets for Safety inclusive of a comprehensive Safety scorecard
    • Facilitate the development of Safety business plans for OBUs/OHubs/SBUs
    • Provide input into the formulation and development of position statements where applicable

     

    Development of procedures, and toolkits with inputs from the business

    • Develop Safety procedures and toolkits to enable the business to achieve sustainable excellent Safety results through occupational safety, process safety, service provider management, incident investigation and behaviour based safety processes and initiatives
    • Develop solutions for improvement opportunities in conjunction with business SHE teams

     

    Drive regional and global standardisation (where applicable).

    • Develop controls for Safety undesirable events/ risks
    • Technical input and requirements for the BD&I model and in the execution of projects
    • Provide input to the development of governance measures for Safety

     

    Maturity gap analysis between performance and practices in businesses

    • Analyse Safety results and monthly scorecard, in conjunction with Game Plan tracking results, to identify improvement opportunities.
    • Develop and implement Safety maturity indication tool as part of the 1S SHE EA maturity focus, analyse the business and provide input to business SHE improvement plans

     

    Provide implementation support to businesses – “maturity” assistance

    • Responsible for relevant IMS portions related to Safety and ensure that corrective actions from relevant audits are addressed.
    • Ensure involvement in non-conformance management processes related to Safety by participating in incident investigations where necessary
    • Ensure Safety adherence to SHE policies standards, governance and best-practices.

    Understand stakeholder needs and ensure alignment of solutions provided

    • Build and establish positive internal and external working relationships globally related to Safety.
    • Create alignment and role clarification between Safety and other functions (e.g. Asset management), as well as other SHE sub-functions
    • Create an enabling environment to engage with Safety stakeholders across the Group

    Subject-matter experts – keep up to date with industry trends and internal best practices, engage in industry forums where applicable

    • Keep-up-to-date with industry trends and internal best practices, engage in industry forums where applicable
    • Engage external stakeholders to influence or gain insight and conduct benchmarking on Safety improvement methods. Examples CAIA, EPSC, IChemE, BST and South African industry partners
    • Trend analysis, benchmarking and research of global Safety developments for the formulation of the Safety strategy

    Management

    • Input to reporting and response on Safety incidents (for this role mostly product transportation and customer incidents)
    • Provide input to monthly/quarterly/annual reporting from an Safety enablement view
    • Provide technical direction to the Safety team.
    • Enable and sustain high performance and seek opportunities for personal and team growth monitored through structured performance contracts and development plans
