About the Position

The accountant roles & responsibilities will be split into 2 regions:

South & East Africa (consisting of South Africa; Namibia; Zambia; and Inspection South Africa (including Johannesburg and Durban entities)); and Coal (including Witlab & Naledi entities)

West Africa (consisting of Mali, Ivory Coast; Burkina Faso; Ghana; Liberia; DRC and Cameroon)

Accountants will be swopped between regions as and when required by the company.

This position will be responsible for South Africa and Zambia

Location: ALS Chemex South Africa, Johannesburg

Specific Responsibilities

• Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations as per given deadlines;
• Ensure all month end activities are done on time as per given month end timetable;
• Reconcile GEMS sales with SAP revenue on a monthly basis;
• Ensure a proper audit file (hard copy and soft copy) are kept on a monthly basis , this file should consist of a minimum of
• Journal entries passed for the month (properly approved by Financial manager and review with RFC);
• Balance sheet reconciliations and all supporting documentation, review and signed off by Financial manager;
• SAP reports (Balance sheet ,P&L, Ageing reports)
• Signed off summary payroll report;
• Any other external reports;
• Stock Management :
• Ensure regular stock takes are done and reconciled to the balance sheet;
• Fixed asset management :
• Ensure Fixed Assets Register (FAR) is updated regularly and physically verified on a regular basis;
• Ensure depreciation methods are correctly applied, as per Global depreciation policy;
• Financial Packs control :
• Ensure packs are prepared accurately and submit to FM for review on a timely basis;
• Prepare explanation of variance analysis on a regular basis;
• Provisions & Accruals :
• Ensure all liabilities are properly captured, monitored and verified
• P&L detail reporting and reconciliation :
• All Salaries and Wages related expenses to be properly reconciled to the signed off (by Remuneration and Benefits Controller) payroll reports, on a monthly basis;
• All revaluation adjustments to be verified to additional calculations
• Analyse and report on high volume/value expenses, as and when required.
• Ensure that all transactions are accurate and in line with the country specific accounting standards, as well as company financial policy and procedure manual;

About you

• Minimum B.com degree or bookkeeping diploma;
• At least 2 years’ experience in a similar role or 5 years if only bookkeeping diploma.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• The ability to work accurately with minimal supervision on routine accounting tasks;
• Able to prioritize and give accurate feedback on time;
• High standards of attention to detail;
• Excellent business communication skills, both written and oral;
• Fiscal and numerical competency;
• Must be fully computer literate in MS Office;
• Ability to work under pressure and to strict deadlines;
• Knowledge of SAP;
• Will be expected to travel as needed to regions.
