    Data Scientist (Group Decision Science Associate)

    Job description

    The Commonwealth Bank Group is executing a plan to enter and disrupt the South African banking market.     The Purpose Of The Role

    You’ll be part of a global team for this top-10 global bank that’s building next generation information and analytics capabilities and leveraging alternative data sources to secure and enhance the financial wellbeing of people, customers and communities in South Africa.

    You Will

    • Perform the following tasks in manner consistent with CBA’s values of Integrity, Accountability, Service, Excellence and Collaboration. People Capabilities will be at the forefront of what you do including Customer Focus, Team & Culture, Continuous Improvement, Effective Communication, Judgement and Drive Results.
    • Participate in all stages of analytic projects in response to business needs.
    • Implement within South Africa processes related to modelling and analytics on large and complex data sets that are market specific as needed.
    • Use Hadoop and other data platforms along with the relevant programming/statistical package for large scale problem solving.
    • Understand complex business challenges, develop hypotheses, integrate internal and external data sources.
    • Analyse data using advanced machine learning or statistical modelling techniques to uncover causality and synthesize insights.
    • Create new models through entire life cycle using the most effective application of unguided, semi-guided and guided parametric and non-parametric modelling Work with business domain experts, behavioural finance experts, and quantitative modellers and data scientists in Group Centre to identify data relevant for analysis.
    • Clean, manipulate and investigate large data sets, including fuzzy logic based merging and de-individualisation for privacy.
    • Create data definitions for new database development and/or changes to existing ones as needed for analysis by Group Centre quantitative modellers and data scientists.
    • Run the analyses in conjunction with Group Centre quantitative modellers and data scientists.
    • Investigate the impact of new computing technologies and niche, cutting edge analytical techniques and specialised applications, on the future of banking.
    • Implement sophisticated models in live operating environments in collaboration with business, risk, enterprise services and other stakeholders within the organization.
    • Assist business and risk colleagues in the development of decisioning rules/strategies utilising the insights, attributes and models created.
    • Apply data quality standards and adhere to change process requirements
    • Train line and operating personnel in model usage and problem detection.

    What will make you successful?

    • PhD/Post Doc in any field with advanced quantitative focus or Masters or Bachelors degree with high distinction in modelling oriented discipline including but not limited to Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Econometrics, Engineering, etc.
    • Background in modelling and analytics with a leading information-based company. Experience in small business or consumer risk or marketing, especially scoring and forecasting models (advantageous)
    • Deep understanding of South Africa’s culture, regulatory structures, customer behaviour.
    • 3+ years of working in large and medium project teams in a self-directed contributing member or business analyst roles
    • Strong understanding of predictive / analytical modelling techniques, theories, principles, and practices
    • Strong hands-on knowledge of data mining / predictive modelling tools such as R, SAS, Python, etc.
    • Strong familiarity and experience with data preparation and processing - such as assessment of data quality, merging datasets, new variable creation, variable selection, creation of trend attributes from time series snapshots, etc.
