Purpose of Job:

• The Design and Build Dataspecialist defines the data landscape structures all data for optimal access, performance, security, and integration.
• This role is responsible for building new data sets and data structures as required to support business needs, and for managing the distribution, replication, and archival of data.
• The designer must manage the balance of current and future needs in both design and content.
• This role requires a rare blend of skills normally found in the specialized roles of business analyst, data modeler, data architect, and database analyst.
• The designer also works closely with the BI data architect to ensure compliance with all standards, and to ensure that the project deliverables are consistent with the integrated data model and other information architecture deliverables.
• The specialist is also responsible for the data platform that supports the Data Scientist and Self Service Services.
• The role involves a deep understanding of systems and how they integrate from an infrastructure perspective including network configuration, security and hardware.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience required:

• Completed Bachelor’s degree.
• Minimum of 7 years total experience in Database Administration
• 3 years relevant experience Business/MI Data Analytics/Data Modelling
• Deep understanding of Systems and Infrastructure including Network configuration, Database Management, Integration Patterns, Security setup (AD integration)
• Experience with Microsoft PowerPoint and Word is critical to daily work.
• Experience with data modelling based on 3rd Normal form. Strong understanding of Data Platforms, cloud or on-premise
• Strong understanding of Metadata Management and Metadata Architecture
• Knowledge of programming languages and experience in applying these for analytical or data management purposes (Python, Ruby, R, Java)
• Technical knowledge of analytics tools: (e.g. SAS, SPSS, MatLab, R etc.).
• Experience in the setup of data platforms / systems
• Understanding of data management disciplines outside analytics (data modelling, data integration, metadata architecture, data warehousing, BI etc)
• Strong knowledge and experience of Excel - Essential
• A proven ability to rigorously analyse complex issues and develop insights and solutions.
• An ability to provide creative thinking and innovative methods.
• Good presentation skills and experience of delivering to Senior Management or CXO level.
• An ability to work in mixed teams of colleagues and senior client executives.
• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills with high levels of enthusiasm and a good team player.

Key accountabilities:

• Gathers data requirements in the SBU/OBU/Functions
• Understand OBU/SBU/Function strategy, business imperatives and KPIs
• Assist Analysts to analyse, innovate, and provide predictive analytics on significant amounts of data to support company initiatives
• Explore and recommend emerging technologies, framework, methods to support/enhance advanced Data Visualisation
• Interview end users to determine requirements for data, reports, analyses, metadata, training, service levels, data quality, and performance
• Translate requirements into technical specifications
• Document requirements
• Help identify and assess potential data sources
• Recommend appropriate scope of requirements and priorities
• Validate that landscape and solution meets requirements and service level agreements
• Coordinate prototype reviews
• Gather prototype feedback
• Serves as a liaison between the SBU/OBU/Functions end users and BI project team
• Understand OBU/SBU/Function strategy, business imperatives and KPIs
• Develop and support current business analytical capabilities and tools -
• Be an expert in understanding business objectives, questions, and problems, and at obtaining and presenting data to address the issues.
• The individual designs and builds the data landscape that support the applications through a mastery of techniques and tools that range from basic queries through multidimensional analyses and data mining, forming new relations and derivations as necessary, and extracting the maximum amount of valid information content from the data.
• Extensive insight into the business and the data are essential.
• The design and build of data platforms to provide the optimal balance of data availability, format, flexibility, and performance.

• Design and build Expert responsibilities
• Create and Maintain –Metadata Model for Sasol
• Assist to review business enterprise model
• Interpret business data requirements
• Maintain staging area Standards, Policies and Procedures
• Create and Maintain the Standards, Policies and Procedures for the Data Platforms that support the data and Information models, structures
• Interact with infrastructure stakeholders and vendors to coordinate/manage changes to data platforms
• Monitor the usage and monetary spend on the data platforms
• Validate metadata models with control and operational data
• Develop processes for capturing and maintaining metadata from all Data and Information components
• Drive a data-oriented culture in SBU/OBU/Function
• Drive the use of dataas a strategic asset in the SBU/OBU/Function
• Engage and champion the management support of data throughout the SBU/OBU/Function;
• Ensure value data and information insights are widely available to those who need them throughout the SBU/OBU/Function via the data platform and its visualisation tools
