    Scientist: Information

    Job description

    Biovac is the only company in South Africa, and one of a few in Africa, focussed on human vaccine development and manufacture.   It plays a significant part in contributing to the bioeconomy of South Africa. As a centre of excellence in Africa, Biovac continues to expand its platform technologies to support product development and manufacture with the aim of responding to vaccine needs in Africa and other developing countries.

    A recent product development project opportunity has created the need for an energetic, creative and highly motivated Information Scientist within the Science and Innovation (S&I) Department at Biovac.

    The successful incumbent will be based in Cape Town and will be joining at a particularly exciting time for the company as it continues to strengthen and build on its successes to further develop its capabilities, products, services and market diversification.   He/She will report to the S&I Quality Group Leader and will be part of a dynamic team working on the development of novel vaccines.

    The Key Performance Area for this position will focus on technical delivery.

    The Scientist will be responsible for managing information in order to make it easily accessible to members of a particular group or organisation..

    This includes, but is not limited to:

    • Evaluating, organising, cataloguing, classifying, managing and distributing information in a variety of formats and ensuring that the information is kept updated.
    • Creating databases
    • using electronic and printed resources to respond to enquiries;
    • selecting and acquiring new resources;
    • cataloguing and indexing materials;
    • conducting information audits;
    • scanning and abstracting material;
    • training colleagues and clients on how to use specific databases and systems;
    • circulation of current information issues to staff.
    • managing electronic information
    • Ensuring that information is up to date
    • Ensuring that data protection laws are met
    • carrying out information audits,
    • searching for and retrieving information from the internet and online databases
    • Tracking and control of various logs, note books and other scientific reports as required by the Department and the Projects,
    • Adherence to current regulations and guidelines – both local (Medicines and Related Substances Act 101 of 1965, Pharmacy Act 53 of 1974) and international.

    Candidate specifications:

    • A 3 year post matric qualification with experience in the relevant discipline, for example, Biotechnology or Information Systems.
    • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams.
    • Good knowledge of MS office suite of programs with emphasis on Word and Excel.
    • Experience in coordination and execution of additional activities and functions with respect to:
    • Dealing with research enquires and questions
    • Raw materials, consumables and equipment procurement tracking
    • Tracking of the monitoring of critical equipment and utilities
    • Control and tracking scientific record numbers and documentation
    • Strong skills in data analysis and statistics.
    • Good presentation and technical writing skills.
    • Ability to communicate and relate well with people at all levels.
    • Self-starter, hands on approach, with a drive for excellence and high standards.
    • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities.

    The following would be advantageous:

    • Knowledge of MS Access
    • Knowledge of MS Sharepoint
    • Knowledge of cGMP (SA, PIC, WHO) and GLP guidelines.

    Other requirements:

    • Local and international travel may be required.
    • Own, reliable transport required for possible standby and shift work.
    • Flexible working hours

    The position is a long-term fixed contract position with the opportunity for permanent employment. An annual salary which is competitive in the research and development sector in SA will be negotiated relevant to experience.
