    Associate, Access to Medicines

    Position Overview
    CHAI is seeking a highly motivated individual with proven relationship management skills, excellent analytical ability and strong communication skills to play a key role in the Access to Medicines program in South Africa. The Associate will input to a growing CHAI team and will be expected to support the National Department of Health (NDoH) create and execute evidence-based plans and strategies. The Associate will be responsible for a wide variety of tasks, from quantitative analysis to collaborating with stakeholders. The Associate will work in close collaboration with the Program Manager to drive South Africa’s AHD efforts to accelerate affordable availability, introduction, and uptake of effective AHD commodities in South Africa. The role will be responsible for supporting the National Department of Health (NDoH) to develop strategies to adopt and rollout optimal diagnostic and treatment services for AHD. The associate will provide technical expertise to NDoH to generate evidence on effective implementation and uptake strategies, monitoring progress, and problem solving as needed, to achieve the ultimate project objective of catalyzing sustainable markets for AHD commodities.

The Associate will be based in Pretoria, South Africa, and report to the Access to Medicine Program Manager.

    • Support the NDoH in all areas of national AHD efforts, including planning and implementation.
    • Develop thorough understanding of the healthcare, pharmaceutical and diagnostic landscape related to the medicines and equipment portfolio within South Africa and globally including key priorities, challenges, and gaps in order to inform program development.
    • Oversee the translation of objectives provided by the government, donors, and other partner organizations into clear, prioritised activity plans and being able to report on the progress of executing these.
    • Develop and manage collaborative relationships with the NDoH, suppliers, partner organizations and other relevant stakeholders.
    • Ensure communication and alignment of activities across government and partner stakeholders’ efforts and across other CHAI programs in South Africa to ensure coordination and successful execution of the program.
    • Oversee analyses of policy and regulatory landscape to inform recommendations and support any revisions that may be required to ensure the smooth introduction of products and/or services.
    • Oversee quantification, costing, implementation and monitoring of detailed national commodity and equipment procurement optimization, introduction and scale up plans.
    • Conduct routine field supervision visits, data collection, and routine data analysis of national and program data.
    • Develop and maintain program databases and dashboards for performance monitoring and evaluation.
    • Oversee the development and input provided to relevant technical documents including health services provider training curricula, standard operating procedures, and service delivery guidelines to support the program scale up.
    • Translate objectives provided by the government, donors, and other partner organizations into clear activity plans, and provide guidance to DoH on prioritization of initiatives.
    • Ensure communication and alignment of activities across government and partner stakeholders’ efforts and across other CHAI programs in South Africa to ensure coordination and successful execution of the program.
    • Support the Program Manager on key deliverables and ad-hoc requirements, as needed.
    • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Public Health, Business, or a related field and minimum of three years professional experience in a private or public sector setting and with increasing levels of responsibility and experience.
    • Clinical and/or technical expertise in supporting national health programs
    • Advanced problem solving, analytical, and quantitative skills, including significant experience working in Excel (modelling) and PowerPoint, and presenting findings and recommendations (analytical skills and proficiency levels will be evaluated during recruiting process).
    • Entrepreneurial mind-set demonstrated ability to work independently on complex projects and solve challenging problems, in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
    • Strategically minded, able to think creatively around long-term program objectives and the detailed steps necessary to achieve these goals.
    • Demonstrated ability to multi-task with a strong commitment to excellence, both internally and externally, and with limited structural support.
    • Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills.
    • Exceptional diplomatic and interpersonal skills, and ability to build strong professional relationships with a range of stakeholders in a challenging, multi-cultural environment.
    • Ability to navigate complex governmental and organizational processes and favourably influence decision making in a professional and collaborative manner.
    • Willingness to travel within South Africa as needed.
