    Associate Researcher: Wealth Inequality- Grant Funded 18-Month contract

    Department Description        

    • The Southern Centre for Inequality Studies (SCIS) is an interdisciplinary research centre located in the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management. One of its projects focuses on understanding the processes that produce and reproduce the extreme concentration of wealth inequality (or extreme ownership of assets) in the context of the social structures in the global South.
    • To support this project, SCIS wishes to appoint an Associate Researcher to join the Wealth Inequality team. You will work on the Economic and Social Research Council funded project ‘Transnational Elite Communities. There will be mentorship and time allocated for personal advancement and an optional opportunity to visit the Principal Investigator at the University of Oxford in the UK for two months. They will assist with qualitative research, collection, and review of data, and assist with any other research and project related tasks. The successful person will be someone who is flexible, innovative, and proactive with the ability to work in a diverse team.  

    Brief Description        
    REQUIREMENTS:

    Essential

    • A Master’s degree in sociology, human geography or a related field;
    • Demonstrable experience in supporting research in an academic context;
    • Experience doing field work and data collection;
    • Strong qualitative skills and the ability to do data extraction and coding with experience working on qualitative data analysis software programmes like NVivo, Atlas.ti, etc;
    • Highly organised and able to identify, compile and organise mixed data-sets
    • Experience of project management and organisation of events

    Desirable

    • Experience working with mapping software, such as GIS, etc.
    • Expertise in elite studies
