Job Title: System Technician – Scales and Automation
Location: Ferndale, Gauteng
Duration: Fixed term contract
Remote: NO
Reports to: General Manager / MD
Remuneration: TBD
Overview: The Opto Group of Companies is looking for a System Technician specialising in Scales and Automation.
The Opto Group provides Industrial Automation solutions in the form of hardware and software to various industries
Key Responsibilities include:
- Assembling, calibrating (programming), testing and inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing a wide variety of weighing systems and related equipment
- Positively interacting with customers by providing technical support, training on equipment use
1. Travelling to and from customer locations
2. Maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment
3. Maintaining service vehicles, equipment, and tools
4. Completing job related documentation clearly and efficiently.
5. Installing and supporting software remotely and on site.
6. Planning and installation of power and network Cabling on site.
7. Perform Calibrations on large and small weighing equipment.
8. Assists and cooperates with Service Coordinators whenever necessary.
9. Ensures productivity standards are met and includes assurance of data integrity of the service database.
10. Ensures customer uptime requirements are met and that PM work at assigned account is completed on time.
11. Initiates efforts to modernize, upgrade, and convert customer existing equipment.
12. Coordinates business information to customers, sales associates, and is proactive in promoting and selling service income-producing products.
13. Drives safely and maintains a valid driver’s license.

15. Troubleshoot PLC and electrical control systems
Requirements: The successful candidate must have/be able to:
16. Matric Certificate and tertiary level electronics.
17. Be able to work independently on site.
18. Be able to travel in-town and out-of-town (in company provided vehicles), including overnight travel (expenses will be covered).
19. Be physically able to lift (and move) 20 to 45 Kgs, repeatedly.
20. Must be able to pass a full medical assessment.
21. Be able to easily move on or under truck scales. (Bend, Kneel, Stoop, Crouch, Climb)
22. Have a valid driver’s license with clean driver’s history.
23. Must have a valid Passport.
24. Have a positive attitude and follow instructions well.
25. Excellent Witten and verbal communication skills
26. A growth mindset and willingness to accept criticism.
27. Experience working with TCP/IP and non-TCP/IP communications like RS232, RS485.
28. Experience working with peripheral I/O, remote I/O.
29. Ability to build automation panels.
30. Willing to travel and work in hazardous environment.
31. Ability to read, understand and draw wiring diagrams.
32. Strong networking and PC Skills. Must understand the basics of networking and be able to setup PC’s and install software including drivers.
33. Must be able to use a soldering iron and adept with using hand tools and power tools.
34. Strong Problem-solving ability
35. Knowledge of electrical safety
36. Experience with automation systems. Installation, Setup, Troubleshoot, Isolate problems and repairs.
37. Understand operation and wiring of relays.
38. Verification Officer Certification would be advantageous.
