Contribute to the design of the Operations Divisional Strategy and ensure strategies are implemented and integrated within areas of responsibility
Lead the development and implementation of the Operations department’s strategy
Drive the profitability of the department and the overall Division
Ensure the management and control of the department’s budget
Drawing up Annual Budget (including review of Asset Register)
Track and control monthly budget (approve orders and payments against planned budget)
Identify any discrepancies and implement corrective actions
Ensure cost and headcount containment within area of control
Ensure legal compliance with related legislation
Design, implement and revise policies based on trend analysis
Implement quality assurance programmes and conduct compliancy audits
Evaluate adequacy of procedures and recommend corrective actions
Work collaboratively with other departments in order to achieve a common goal
Develop networks, identify revenue-generating opportunities and participate in negotiation of provider contracts Operations
Ensure the efficient and effective management of the department and associated functions
Optimise technology to enhance internal and external customer expectations
Ensure all processes implemented to deliver customer value
Drive customer centricity within all areas of control
Establish and manage effective internal and external stakeholder relationships through appropriate relationship building and networking
Ensure that effective Governance and Risk Management policies, processes and systems are in place for the department
Ensure regular and timeous reporting of information to key stakeholders
Lead and drive continuous optimisation programmes and initiatives for the department
Manage a comprehensive Occupational Health programme
Review and advise on medical surveillance programmes within the company
Ensure planning and completion of the above in compliance statutory and legal requirements
Conduct occupational health risk assessments, recommend and implement corrective actions
Compile, review and implement health-, environmental and safety related policies and procedures
Assist and advise on management of medical emergencies, occupational disease and injuries on duty
Assess and advise on management of absenteeism and disability
Provide health-related advice and relevant training to employees
Manage a comprehensive passenger care programme
Advise and assist with implementation of policies related to travel of passengers with medical conditions
Advise and inform passengers of air travel related health issues
Authorisation and oversight of medical reservations
Research, advise and oversee adequacy of emergency medical equipment on-board aircraft
Participate in disaster management and DOH passenger health care initiatives and actions
Manages a comprehensive communicable disease outbreak programme as and when required
Manages the implementation of the Company’s special sick leave policy pertaining to air crew
Administrative duties
Ensure compliance of documentation with relevant legislation
Ensure accuracy, confidentiality and safekeeping of medical information
Prepare monthly and annual management reports
Wellness development and management
Promote wellness within the company by means of education, training and providing access to service programmes
Review and maintain an Employee Assistance Programme in order to provide cost-effective support to employees
Resource management
Recruit and retain staff who possess the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to work effectively in the Medical Department
Provide formal and informal training to staff
Implement efficient systems and equipment within the department to provide a comprehensive service of good quality
Liaison with regulatory bodies relating to the withdrawal and re-instatement of the crew DD50 licenses and assist crew with submission to the SACAA Medical Panel in this regard
Provide expertise/ consult with SAA Management regarding the fitness of crew to operate aircraft while maintaining the confidentiality of the medical information
Qualifications & Experience
Registration with South African Health Professions Council
Registration with SACAA as a senior AME
Registration with a medical insurance provider
Medical degree with postgraduate degree in Aviation Medicine
Diploma in Occupational Medicine
License to dispense medication
Minimum 10 years’ experience in Aviation Medicine
Minimum 8 years general management experience
Experience in occupational health, corporate wellness, disability management and workers compensation
