Role Purpose

• The Data Warehouse Engineer is tasked with overseeing the full life-cycle of back-end development of the business's data warehouse. The Data Warehouse Engineer is responsible for the development of ETL processes and various administration and dimensional design of the table structures. The Data Warehouse Engineer works closely with various internal stakeholders, including, but not limited to data analysts and senior data teams in order to power insight and avail meaningful data products for the business and enable consistently informed management decisions.

What you're going to do

ETL: Develop and maintain the ETL processes:

• Identify, analyse, design and maintain the loading of data into the warehouse from different source environments.
• Use Linux shell script to code jobs to run ETL.
• Do necessary checks to ensure that the tables loaded balances back to the operational system in terms of control totals and record counts as per Audit requirements.
• Develop and maintain procedures and standards for processes e.g.
  • Extraction and loading of data
  • Coding and naming standards
  • Scheduling of DWH scripts and jobs.
• Develop Change control standards.
• Do all of the above in accordance with best practice, standards and procedures as approved by the database manager and SAS 70.

Database maintenance:

• Identifying potential improvements to the design of the warehouse and ETL processes.
• Maintain security and access to the database.
• Monitor the database and tables space usage.
• Archive historical data and delete unused tables.
• DWH performance monitoring and performance.
• Core system availability (99.99%).
• Data trends, forecasting, Statistics and Reporting.
• Limit Priority 1's.
• Extended Operational support (24/7).

Provide Technical Support:

• Providing technical support and assistance to the Business Intelligence and IT developers.
• Assist Business Intelligence in the creation of summary tables and data marts that will deliver information to internal as well as external clients.
• Approve, schedule and test code.
• Assist business users in validating production data and trouble-shoot problems.

Effective Project Delivery:

• Participate in Metropolitan Health projects e.g.:
  • Migration
  • Upgrades
  • New system developments and year-end projects.
  • DWH Audit - internal and external.
• Effective project delivery - Delivery of projects on time within the agreed budgets.
• Ensure Continuous Service Improvement (CSI).
• Achieving Operational Excellence.
• Innovation:
• Promote new techniques and Data Warehousing tools that shape the future of the Data Warehousing in the business, i.e. Unstructured data, Data Lakes, Apache Hadoop/ Spark/Hive/Kafka.
• Objectives:
• Continually finding new ways of cost savings.
• Team Relationship management - Engaging and partnering with other IT and Business support teams.
• Ensuring effective service delivery to our Business Partners - are we focussing on the right things.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

• Grade 12/Matric or Equivalent.
• Relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. Computer Science degree / diploma or IT-related degree).

Minimum Experience:

• 5 - 7 years of experience in IT.
• Data Warehousing experience (current).
• Engagement with internal stakeholders with regards to setting up controls (processes and standards).
• Bigger picture and attention to detail orientation.
• SQL advanced coding.
• Understanding of data.
• Ability to present information best aligned to business needs.
• Understanding of BI.
• Database administration (advantageous).
• Basic Linux shell scripting (requirement),
