    GIS Technician (Level 8), Head Office - Bridgetown

    Job Description

    CapeNature seeks to appoint a dynamic individual to provide a professional GIS support service. The GIS Technician forms part of the Biodiversity Capabilities team and will provide GIS support to the Biodiversity capabilities unit with particular support to Integrated Catchment management on all protected areas as well as off-reserve components.

    The purpose of the GIS Technician post is to generate and manage science-based knowledge; contribute planning and data management; generate impact through reporting on spatial datasets; develop and maintain collaborations and partnerships to augment capacity and capability to deliver a GIS-based conservation service; and deploy innovation to develop human and knowledge capital towards achieving the strategic objectives of CapeNature.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    KRA 1: Gather, process and develop the integration of spatial and related knowledge, planning and monitoring products and systems to advance the practice of biodiversity conservation and integrated catchment management.

    • Assist with the collection, verification and analysis of spatial datasets.
    • Provide GIS related analyses and products in support in the compilation of conservation plans and reports.
    • Maintain a register and archive of all Protected Area proclamation information.
    • Maintain a register of potential and current Stewardship sites.

    KRA 2: Provide ecological decision support for effective landscape conservation and ensure sound scientific analysis of data through coordination to guide management planning and assessment.

    • Provide spatial data and derived information contributions to support CapeNature biodiversity policies and strategies.

    KRA 3: Generate impact through the enablement, development and integration of leading-edge information, technologies, practice, policy, science and innovation.

    • Contribute to curation and maintenance of datasets for the corporate GIS database.
    • Develop GIS products through analyses, maps, reports, annual products and ad-hoc requests.
    • Compile high quality corporate technical and scientific reports.
    • Assist with the creation of content or products for public access through web-based platforms

    KRA 4: Engage and collaborate with strategic partners for advancing, securing and enabling the development and deployment of biodiversity conservation capabilities.

    • Provide technical support to CapeNature partnerships and collaborations.
    • Provide technical assistance for integrating spatial data and information management systems.

    KRA 5: Develop and implement biodiversity capability, capacity and the integration of innovation and technology.

    • Develop and participate in internal capability development interventions and in-house training.
    • Contribute to the integration of maintained, updated, and effective conservation management system, corporate GIS and biodiversity
    • Compilation and updating of knowledge products, such as Standard Operating Guidelines, Standard Operating Protocols and Operational Memoranda.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • A Natural Science degree in the field of Geomatics, Environmental Management, Conservation Science, Ecological Science, Biological Science or Zoological Science. NQF 7 or higher.
    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
    • Demonstrable working knowledge of ArcGIS & QGIS software, remote sensing and modelling software.
    • Demonstrable knowledge of digitising and data manipulation and curation procedures for GIS.
    • Demonstrable knowledge of advanced spatial analyses, including modelling.
    • Knowledge of the principles, techniques and applications of GIS spatial database management and quality control for data curation purposes.
    • Knowledge of cartography, map reading, geometry and mathematics.
    • Experience and understanding of the use of GPS technology.
    • Three or more years of experience in a GISc or data technician post.

    • Good oral and written communication skills, including a friendly and helpful disposition, in order to provide a professional and effective support function to colleagues and other clients.
    • An active learning, innovative and problem-solving approach to job, with good organisation skills.
    • Ability to work to a detailed schedule and meet deadlines and keep a detailed log of work-related activities for reporting purposes.
    • Good computer literacy, including the MSOffice suite, digital file management and the ability to operate the relevant GIS software efficiently.
    • Ability to identify, analyse and resolve problems applicable to GIS hardware and software.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other GIS users, including colleagues, peers and professional associations.
    • A valid Code EB08 drivers license.
