    Head: Division of Paediatric Surgery (E230256)

    The vision of the Faculty of Health Sciences is to be a centre of excellence that is locally relevant and globally competitive. Established in 1912, the Faculty is the top-rated Faculty of Health Sciences on the African continent.

    The Department of Surgery hosts the Divisions of Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Global Surgery, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Paediatric Surgery and Urology. The Department of Surgery is a strong multidisciplinary department in the Faculty of Health Sciences with extensive undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training of medical students as well as students pursuing academic study in Surgery. The department makes a significant contribution to under-graduate teaching in the Faculty of Health Sciences clinical programs. The department offers several post-graduate (honours, masters and doctoral) degrees in all the academic disciplines. The department has several highly productive research groupings and researchers.

    The University of Cape Town and the Department of Health of the Western Cape Government invite applications for this permanent Charles FM Saint Chair of Paediatric Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. The successful incumbent will also serve as the Head of the Division of Paediatric Surgery at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

    The Division prides itself on providing an outstanding, highly specialized clinical service and excellent teaching to under- and postgraduate students, with a strong emphasis on research. It has an excellent international reputation in all forms of paediatric surgery, including both liver and renal transplantation, minimal invasive surgery, the management of burns, treatment of conjoint twins.

    Requirements:

    • A qualified Paediatric Surgeon.
    • At least 5 years’ experience is mandatory.
    • Registered / registrable as a Specialist in Paediatric Surgery with the Health Professions Council of South
    • A recognised leader in the field of in the field of paediatric surgery
    • A record of scholarship and experience in the areas of clinical service delivery, teaching, training and research
    • Knowledge of the health sector in South Africa and insight into the challenges and opportunities for advancing
    • health care in South Africa and Africa.
    • Demonstrated ability as a manager.
    • A comprehensive view of surgical services for children across all levels of care as well as being committed to the
    • Primary Health Care philosophy and have an outcomes based approach to these services.
    • Should be able to attract and develop staff of quality and provide leadership with regards to issues of diversity, transformation and equity.

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide leadership in the Division and manage its staff, resources and performance (service and academic), inspiring innovation and growth.
    • Provide leadership in addressing issues of diversity, transformation, inclusivity and equity, attracting and developing students and staff of high quality.
    • Be responsible for overseeing clinical governance and relevant legislative mandates in line with provincial service delivery platforms and regulations
    • Will be expected to be an active clinician, participating actively in the surgical service and working closely with hospital management.
    • Will be expected to be a productive academic, driving research and overseeing undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
    • Demonstrate social responsiveness through outreach, policy, health systems development and engagement with other stakeholders including government and civil society organisations
