Description

• The Junior Systems Engineer supports the design, installation, administration, and maintenance of the organisation’s server and network systems. The role contributes to the stability, integrity, and performance of information systems by assisting with routine monitoring, troubleshooting, and configuration tasks.
• This includes supporting new system implementations, performing optimisation activities, and ensuring the availability of core server and network services.
• Collaboration with cross-functional teams to develop scalable solutions and implement security measures is integral to driving technological advancements within the organisation's I&T environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy & Planning

• Integrate and optimise operating environments for efficiency and reliability.
• Research, recommend, and deploy server and network hardware, software, and protocols.
• Analyse infrastructure performance and implement improvements.
• Ensure smooth software and systems operation in support of business processes.
• Develop, implement, and test disaster recovery plans.
• Manage IT infrastructure acquisition and deployment. 

Acquisition and Deployment

• Deploy and enhance applications, software, and operating systems.
• Research and evaluate software and systems to support recommendations and procurement.
• Engage and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers and contractors for system-related products and services.
• Follow change control processes to maintain stability and ensure high-quality system upgrades, enhancements and patches.

Operational Support and Maintenance

• Provide advanced (2nd & 3rd level) technical support for systems and end-user devices.
• Ensure connectivity and smooth operation of servicers and applications.
• Monitor and report on overall system quality and functionality.
• Train end users on new or modified systems.
• Ensure all technology operations align with FA standards and enterprise architecture policies.

Systems Security and Policies

• Implement security policies, procedures, and technologies to safeguard systems.
• Conduct server and security audits, manage system backups, and support disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
• Perform regular disaster recovery tests, document outcomes, and recommend improvements.

Collaboration and Communication

• Support system availability and scalability through effective team coordination.
• Collaborate across teams to allocate resources and deliver projects successfully.
• Drive knowledge sharing, training, and a positive team culture.
• Ensure clear communication with end users and internal teams.
• Manage engagement with third-party vendors and service providers.

Documentation and Reporting

• Maintain clear documentation of server, network, and disaster recovery processes.
• Produce regular performance and incident reports with root cause and resolution details.
• Create system design models, diagrams, and specifications to support development teams.
• Keep enterprise architecture records illustrating applications and integration paths.
• Log communications and troubleshooting steps to ensure transparency and future support.

Research, Development and Innovation

• Research server and network hardware, software, and protocols to guide procurement and development decisions.
• Monitor industry trends and recommend relevant infrastructure solutions.
• Track server and network performance to identify improvement opportunities.
• Implement enhancements to optimise infrastructure reliability and efficiency.
• Maintain a knowledge base of best practices, troubleshooting steps, and technical solutions.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Preferred Certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+; Microsoft Azure Administrator or Solutions Architect (MCSA/MCSE); CISSP; VMware Certified Professional (VCP); and Cisco CCNA.

EXPERIENCE

• Minimum of 5 years of I&T experience, of which at least 3 years in System Engineering.
• Proven ability to manage and troubleshoot complex I&T infrastructure, with hands-on experience in server setup, configuration, and maintenance.
• Exposure to project planning and implementation for system integrations and enhancements.
• Network and security experience is advantageous, as well as prior experience in mining, mining services, or construction environments.
