• We are looking for a Junior Underwriter, Financial Lines based in Johannesburg. 

Your Team  

• Based in Johannesburg and reporting to Head of Underwriting Financial Lines, you will work closely with clients and brokers to develop personalised solutions as well as developing new relationships. You will be responsible for underwriting profitable new and renewal business to meet Financial Lines targets. Your responsibilities also include negotiating participation, pricing and terms and conditions, acquiring new business and retaining existing business.

• As a Junior Underwriter at Allianz Commercial, you will play a pivotal role in driving our financial lines business forward. Your expertise will directly impact our profitability by securing and renewing high-quality accounts that meet Line of Business (LoB) targets. Through skilled negotiation, you'll optimize participation, pricing, and terms to ensure favorable outcomes. You'll take ownership of accounts and clients, fostering strong, long-term relationships with brokers and clients alike. Your strategic approach and relationship-building skills will be essential in maintaining Allianz’s reputation for excellence and in delivering tailored insurance solutions that meet the evolving needs of our diverse client base. 

Some of your specific responsibilities could include: 

• Underwrite in line with Financial Lines governance framework - e.g. Underwriting Authorities, Underwriting Guidelines, Rules and Principles. 
• Ensure contract certainty is achieved on all accounts at time of inception. 
• Drive involvement of functional areas in Underwriting process, including Market Management, Risk Consulting, Claims, Operations. 
• Manage referrals from underwriters and re-underwrite complex business as appropriate. 
• Contribute to the development and execution of regional Underwriting strategy for Financial Lines. 
• Create and maintain positive relationships with key producers and clients and other relevant stakeholders (e.g. risk managers). 
• Ensure accurate policy documentation is issued to producers (where it is Allianz Commercial’s responsibility to do so) or producers has issued documentation (where producer responsibility). 

What You’ll Bring to the Role 

• Previous experience in the Financial Lines LoB in the insurance market is preferred. 
• Degree-level education or progress towards professional insurance qualification preferred. 
• Ideally, you have built some relationships with clients and brokers at peer group level. 
• Sound understanding of the policy administration life cycle, information collection, policy issuance, premium bookings and credit control. 
• Ability to leverage data, analytics and AI tools to make business more efficient and effective. 
• Basic understanding of the legal and regulatory framework. 
• Ability to design, develop and implement consistent, robust wordings for contracts. 
• Excellent analytical and communication skills. 
• Ability to work in an international matrix organization. 
• You embrace agile working and engage in constant learning, to adapt to internal and external customer needs.
