    Laboratory Assistant (2 Positions)

    The Division of Immunology (Department of Pathology) and Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM) seeks to employ two Laboratory Assistants as of 1 May 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The candidates will work within a team and will be responsible for laboratory maintenance and servicing by providing an efficient support structure to the research and teaching functions of staff and students within the Division of Immunology and Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine  (IDM), respectively.

    Requirements:

    • Grade 12, NQF 4, or National technical certificate
    • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience working in a laboratory environment
    • Basic computer literacy
    • Ability to work within a team and independently
    • Good organizational skills and ability to work efficiently
    • Willingness to assist with ad hoc duties which arise from time to time
    • Advantageous:
    • An understanding of laboratory health and safety practices and working with hazardous or infectious materials
    • Basic knowledge of media and solution preparation

    Responsibilities:

    • Servicing and cleaning of laboratories to ensure uninterrupted and smooth functioning
    • Monitoring and executing laboratory waste disposal and servicing procedures in accordance with specific health and safety practices
    • Preparation, cleaning and sterilisation of glassware, instruments and reagents including operating and monitoring the efficiency of sterilisation equipment
    • General laboratory maintenance including the filling of Liquid Nitrogen tanks and ensuring an adequate supply for optimal operation
    • Ensuring all SOPs are performed in accordance with the laboratory work code
    • Administration – maintaining records and providing cross-cover laboratory assistance as required

    The annual cost of employment, including benefits is R207 839 to R244 513.
