    Job Description
    Job requirements:

    Qualification required:

    • Minimum qualification of a National Diploma Biotechnology/Microbiology or related field.

    Experience required:

    • A minimum of one (1) year relevant experience in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
    • Preparation of culture media.
    • Sample analysis.
    • Basic knowledge of microbiological processes.
    • Adherence to good laboratory practice.

    Key responsibilities:
    Method Validation 

    • Assist with method development and validation.
    • Ensure that any changes are made to the methods if necessary.
    • Ensure equipment maintenance and calibration.
    • Participate in proficiency testing.

    Quality Control

    • Performs Internal verification of equipment.
    • Ensures that the accommodation and environmental conditions of the lab are controlled and recorded accordingly.
    • Checking quality and suitability of bacterial culture media and reagents.
    • Recording quality controls.

    Technical processes - implementation

    • Sample receival – LIMS.                                                 
    • Prepare bacterial culture media, consumables and chemical solutions according to SOPs
    • Perform microbiological sample analysis using proposed SOPs.
    • Conduct bacterial culture media and reagent verification.
    • Equipment calibration (balances, pipettes)
    • Conduct daily temperature checks.
    • Perform quality control of bacterial culture media.
    • Ensure that laboratory equipment is used within calibration period.
    • Maintain a safe record control and filling Certificates of Analysis for all bacterial culture media and reagents used in the laboratory.
    • Take part in Proficiency testing and method validation.

    Meetings

    • Participate in laboratory staff meetings.

    Implementation of QMS (ISO 17025)

    • Implement standard QMS protocols.
    • Consistent and correct application of analytical methods.
    • Compliance to statutory requirements.
    • Records all non-conformances observed for further investigation.

    Communication, Advising and Reporting

    • Comment and report timely on irregularities.
    • Effective communication and reporting that leads to improved internal relationships and decisions.
    • Ensures that all test results comply with the documented quality control criteria.

    Knowledge required:

    • Implementation of the LIMS for traceability (added advantage)
    • Technical processes of microbiology testing in a myriad of matrices
    • ISO 17025:2017 

    Skills required:

    • Well-developed interpersonal skills.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
    • Sound technical record keeping techniques.
    • Ability to work under pressure.
    • Propensity to pay attention to detail.
    • Computer literate – MS Outlook, Word & Excel.
