INTRODUCTION
Genesis Analytics is a consulting firm that houses a team of over 20 consultants in the Financial Services Strategy Practice. Genesis as a firm has over 80 professional staff that advises governments, banks and companies in emerging markets on competition, strategy, regulation, impact measurement, Behavioural Economics, Infrastructure and Market Development. The Financial Services Strategy Practice focus is on Sub-Saharan Africa, with clients that include the big four banks in South Africa, other leading local and regional banks, Fintech companies, Mobile Network Operators (MNO’s), regulators, private equity firms and donors.
PURPOSE AND SCOPE
We are looking for a Payment Consultant with an in-depth good understanding of the payments environment and eco-systems. The consultant will also need to understand the economics of payments for financial institutions and other payment service providers.
The main purpose of the job is to win and manage payment projects. This involves understanding the challenges faced by payments teams in financial institutions, as well as the opportunities that digital payments offer the industry. Projects will require the candidate to manage consultant teams to develop strategies and recommendations for clients.
This will be delivered through:
- Clear direction to team members based on prior consulting experience in financial services and payments
- Conversation with clients, demonstrating a good understanding of payment ecosystems, infrastructure, and regulation.
- Managing the performance of projects and ensure quality assurance of junior consultants’ research outputs
- Clearly articulated recommendations for clients in formal documentations
- Strong networking capabilities and have a network of appropriate relationships
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
KEY INITIATIVES AND PERFORMANCE MEASURES
- Manage projects, generate sound advice and provide quality assistance to clients – use skills and experience to break down difficult problems into tractable component parts and identify practical ways to resolve each component
- Perform rigorous analysis of data and reports using both conceptual problem solving and quantitative approaches – independently identify and overcome data and conceptual problems that emerge during the analysis
- Review the inputs of junior consultants – nurture, train and mentor junior consultants
- Help prepare clearly thought-out and logically written documents using MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel
- Engage with clients and manage client relationships on projects
- Active marketing of Genesis and the practice to ensure ongoing sustainability and extension of the business through work origination
- Undertake new business development - producing proposals, marketing Genesis Analytics to selected clients and developing a network of appropriate relationships and negotiating contracts
- Build company intellectual property
REPORTING STRUCTURE
- Reports to Partner/Management level
- The Roles within the Financial Services Strategy Practice include Partner, Principal, Manager, Senior Associate, Associate, Analyst and Researcher
Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Personal Competencies:
Education and experience required
- 5 – 10 years related experience in management consulting (specifically financial services and preferably payments)
- Postgraduate degree. Preference for Economics and/or Finance. Masters degree is preferable
- Experience in payment consulting and/or hands-on experience in payment services
- Experience in banking and the financial services sector
Knowledge and skills required

- Strong research, analytical and lateral thought processes
- Sound problem solving and judgment skills
- Financial acumen beneficial and must be highly numerate
- Excellent English communication and writing skills – ability to communicate at all levels
