DURATION: This is a two-year contract post. There will be a full performance appraisal after one year, and reappointment for the second year is dependent on a suitable appraisal.
There will be no extension beyond a period of two years from initial appointment. No private practise allowed.
REQUIREMENTS:
Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in a normal specialty. Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in a normal specialty. Current registration with HPCSA for 2026/2027.
Current FCS (SA) specialist registration with the CMSA. Desire to train in the Subspecialty of Surgical Gastroenterology (declaration of interest in Surgical GIT in general, Upper GIT, or Hepatobiliary Surgery is crucial). Ability and willingness to perform after-hours duties
At least six months of experience outside of HPB Surgery will be an advantage.
Duties :
Ability to manage a team of junior and senior doctors. Ability to establish excellent working relationships within the surgical department, other specialties, and allied nursing staff. Ability to perform diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower endoscopy. Ability in Minimal Access Surgery. Capacity to manage change, both within the HPB team and within the emergency unit/theatre/ward/high dependency unit continuum.
Aptitude for increasing the “footprint” of the HPB service across the CHBAH hospital cluster. Surgical skillset to manage emergency general surgery patients, including laparoscopic skills and surgical critical care patients in a high-dependency unit. A Specialist Surgeon is required for the General Surgical Department at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH) as a Training Fellow in Surgical Gastroenterology.
