    Principal Scientist II

    The Development department ensures product quality, consistency and operational efficiency through optimized and validated processes, test methods as well as new product design. Reporting directly to the Senior Manager of Development. The Principal Scientist II will be responsible for and require the following skill set:

    Responsibilities

    • Manages distinct areas(s), with or without subordinates, ensuring that its objectives are aligned with broader area’s objectives. Conceives of, designs, plans and executes assigned research and/or development-related experiments/projects utilizing established and innovative procedures. Participates in planning complex projects. Assumes responsibility for timely completion of projects, ensuring activities are consistent with project critical path and responds appropriately to changing priorities. Makes recommendations, and when appropriate, acts independently to resolve scientific problems encountered during experimental procedures to improve productivity of results. Ensures technical activities under delegated supervision are conducted within internal and external guidelines and regulations.
    • Assumes responsibility for the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of experimental results. Summarizes experimental results, and reviews conclusions with supervisor/project leader. Communicates results of experiments.
    • Analyzes, interprets and records experimental data in a timely manner according to established formats. Produces reports and documents; presents findings and comprehensive project status reviews at internal seminars and meetings. Forms conclusions, and provides insight into process improvements. Integrates previous and current results to determine next experimental steps and the impact of long-range project goals. May assist in preparing summaries, memos, internal reports, presentations, manuscripts, etc.
    • Plans and executes work independently and manages own time to accomplish assigned objectives.
    • Keeps supervisor/project leader informed of project status, particularly of significant findings and results in critical problem areas.
    • Establishes, as appropriate, cross-functional relationships .
    • Serves as a subject matter expert cross-functionally. Has expertise in own discipline which is recognized outside of RSS (but within Roche). Applies expertise to set direction and resolve problems.
    • Keeps informed of trends and developments in area of scientific responsibility.
    • Applies concepts of a particular field or specialization to resolve problems of significant scope and complexity.
    • May lead assigned projects or team.
    • Typically has supervisory responsibility; provides guidance to team members and leads internal/external teams and builds professional relationships. Mentors junior scientific staff.
    • Positions with people management responsibility have full HR responsibility for direct and indirect reports which includes hiring/firing decisions, interviewing, selections, performance feedback, discipline, pay decisions and handling employee grievances/complaints.
    • Decisions impact project team(s) and/or broader organization. Inappropriate decisions may have an impact, causing a delay in operations, a financial expense, or customer or user dissatisfactions.
    • May manage a project budget. Provides input to departmental budget and helps to allocate expenditures efficiently. Forecasts resource needs. Identifies opportunities to reduce costs.
    • May represent RSS as primary contact on cross-business unit projects. Frequent contact with external resources and contacts at various management levels concerning operations or scheduling of specific phases of projects.
    • Sets goals that have short-term (0-3) years positive impact on team members and the organization.
    • Participates in safety, ISO, and QSR implementation .
    • Performs work according to established internal safety guidelines and procedures, and as specified by appropriate external regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA).

    Education:

    • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Biological/Life Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field.
    • Preferred: PhD in Biological/Life Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field.
