Professional Nurse Specialty REF NO: DPKISMH 04 /2026 at KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health

REQUIREMENTS :

•  Grade 1: A minimum of 4 years appropriate/recognisable experience in nursing after registration as Professional Nurse with the SANC in General Nursing. 
• Grade 2: A minimum of 14 (fourteen) years appropriate/recognisable experience in Nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing of which at least 10 (ten) years must be appropriate/recognisable experience in the speciality after obtaining the 1 (one) year post-basic qualification in relevant speciality.
• Minimum Requirements: Senior Certificate or equivalent. Degree/Diploma in General nursing or equivalent qualification that allows for registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse. A relevant one (01) year Post Basic qualification in Operating Theatre Nursing Science. Registration certificate with South African Nursing Council (SANC). Current SANC receipt (2026). A minimum of 4 years appropriate/recognisable experience after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing.
• Knowledge, Skills, Training and Competence Required: Knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures, nursing statutes, and other relevant legal framework. Good communication skills-verbal and written. Co-ordination and liaison skills. Problem solving skills and critical thinking skills. Ability to work within the multidisciplinary team. To nurse a paediatric ventilated/high care patient in ICU within directorate. Maintain Professional growth/ethical standard and self-development. Assist in reduction of complaints within the directorate. Previous experience in the following disciplines would be advantageous: - General surgery. Laparoscopic surgery Orthopaedic surgery, Recovery Room, CSSD, Obstetrics & Gynea. 

DUTIES :

• Effective management of patients, display a concern for patients, promoting and advocating. Proper treatment and care including awareness and willingness to respond to patient’s needs, requirements and expectations. Provision of quality services through setting of standards, policies and procedures. Participate in the implementation of National Priorities clinical guidelines, protocols. Maintain accurate and complete patient records according to legal requirements.
• Exercise control over discipline, grievance and labour relations issues. Promote good working relationships amongst staff and patients. Assist in supervision and development of all nursing staff. Reduction of maternal and child mortality and morbidity rate. Ensure effective participation in all hospital programs e.g. IPC, Quality Assurance, etc. Provide a Safe, therapeutic and hygienic environment for patients, visitors and staff.
