Research Analyst – Johannesburg, South Africa

Main Responsibilities

• Implement the agreed methodologies and highlight opportunities for improvement
• Deliver product specific global balance sheets as well as associated country balance sheets in view of company reports, proprietary research and analysis, commercial data points and trade flow data. Reconcile global balance sheet stock histories with all available pertinent data points.
• Develop trade flow balance sheets to identify mispricing of for regional premium spreads
• Development consumption models for various downstream markets in view of relevant macro and micro economic data points as well as modeling of evolving metals intensity of demand.
• Populate and contribute to the development of an in-house IT system to capture supply and demand fundamentals.
• Maintenance of deliverable and tenderable parity time series
• Collation and modeling of time series on costs and returns across the value chain.
• Maintenance of analyses relating suitably defined economic return time series to stock / use time series
• Continuous communication with analysts and traders on the evolution of fundamentals and associated risks.
• Present analyses at senior levels both internally and externally
• Develop analysis relating stocks/use ratios and production and consumption economics with various components of the markets the company trades
• Present balance sheets as well as underlying assumptions and conclusions on regular research and prop / cash calls
• Actively participate on prop and cash calls to highlight trading opportunities
• Develop an on the ground information network

Education, Skills and Experience

• Minimum 2 years’ experience in commodities research
• Good understanding of the functioning of physical and derivatives markets
• Good understanding of value chains for base metals and of metallurgy beneficial.
• Interest in the functioning of markets and its underlying causes
• Inquisitive, lateral thinker with strong logical reasoning skills
• Ability to absorb and interpret large quantities of information
• Confident verbal and written communication skills in English
• Fluent English; other languages (e.g. Russian, Spanish, French or Turkish) advantageous
• Advanced IT skills in Excel / VBA / Access; coding skills (e.g. Python, SQL, C++, or Matlab) advantageous
• Skills in data management and automation techniques (report mining)
• Ability to be flexible and work to deadlines and under pressure
• Attention to detail and problem solving skills
• Degree in Engineering, Natural Sciences, Economics, Accounting, Computer Science or Mathematics
