As a Legal & Compliance Specialist, you will provide critical legal support to business units, working under the supervision of a senior legal manager. Your role will involve filtering and assigning legal queries, assessing legislative requirements, supporting legal governance, and enabling the organisation to meet its regulatory obligations with precision and integrity.
Key Responsibilities
Provide expert legal advice and support on risk and compliance matters.
Support the Principal Legal Risk Owner by analysing and interpreting legal risks in line with the Group Legal Risk Framework.
Conduct legal research, draft opinions, and deliver practical legal advice to internal stakeholders.
Participate in cross-functional projects and represent Legal in governance forums and working groups.
Assess and document the applicability of legislation across business units, identifying risks, controls, and compliance obligations.
Collaborate on the development and implementation of training initiatives for operational and frontline staff.
Prepare and refine legal content for regulatory submissions and committee reporting.
Evaluate inherent and residual risk ratings and map them to the Group’s Risk Taxonomy, including cyber, ethics, and privacy risks.
Support day-to-day administrative tasks and contribute to the continuous enhancement of legal processes and frameworks.
What We’re Looking For
Admitted Attorney with 2–5 years post-qualification experience
Previous exposure to banking, risk, and/or compliance environments is highly desirable
Strong analytical, research, and legal drafting skills
Excellent knowledge of South African regulatory and legislative frameworks
Detail-oriented with the ability to assess, interpret and apply legislation in a practical business context
A collaborative team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
