    Senior Manager, Transport

    Please note: This role will be based at multiple branches across Gauteng, candidate needs to be able to travel locally on a regular basis.        

    MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:   

    • Planning routes and load scheduling to ensure SLA’s are met.
    • Booking in deliveries and liaising with customers for FTL application. Includes project work.
    • Working with operations to ensure optimisation within our TMS platform. (BlueJay)
    • Ensuring all partners in the supply chain are working effectively and efficiently to ensure smooth operations.
    • Communicating effectively with clients and responding to their requirements.
    • Booking sub-contractors and ensuring they deliver within agreed terms.
    • Oversee the movement, distribution and storage of materials in an organization. Manager our Owner Driver scheme to ensure it operates optimally and that all governance issues are complied with.
    • Be in close collaboration with the control rooms wrt route controls and investigations

     

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

    • Directing all transportation activities.
    • Developing transportation relationships.
    • Monitoring transport costs.
    • Negotiating and bargaining transportation prices / Negotiating contracts to reduce costs and achieve maximum efficiency.
    • Obtaining quotes for transportation and also making cost comparisons.
    • Accurately calculating total supply chain costs in relation to proposed new projects.
    • Dealing with the effects of congestion.
    • Confronting climate change issues by implementing transport strategies and monitoring an organisation’s carbon footprint
    • Control the flow of incoming materials and outgoing finished products to ensure customers receive products on time.
    • Prepare reports for upper management; negotiate shipping and supplier costs, and work to improve the efficiency of the company’s supply chain.
    • Working closely with suppliers and the customer to improve operations and reduce cost.
    • Working closely with suppliers and the customer contract managers to identify transport costs within existing budgets and identify opportunities to release potential benefits.
    • Working closely with the operational teams and customer operations optimize material availability
    • Monitoring data management to keep accurate product, contract, pricing and invoicing information.
    • Facilitate the creation of accurate routing plans/schedules to ensure that delivery times and locations are coordinated.
    • Ensure all transport functions and processes are fully compliant with legislative and company procedures

       

    JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS:

    • Minimum of 5 years Management Experience.
    • Valid Driver’s License
    • Excellent English required (verbal & written)
    • Ability to appraise and use IT packages and electronic communication methods.
    • Tact, diplomacy and calmness, especially when dealing with tired drivers and disgruntled customers.
    • An analytic mind and good numeracy skills.
    • Excellent geographical knowledge.
    • Good people management and coordination skills.
    • Excellent financial acumen.
    • Excellent negotiation and communication skills.
    • Extensive knowledge of the transportation industry.
    • Good intuition to make crucial judgment calls.
    • The ability to work well under pressure

    • Strong Management and leadership skills
    • Willingness to travel if required

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Matric.
    • B-Com - Logistics or Transport Management degree or similar - Advantageous

    COMPUTER KNOWLEDGE:

    • Excellent knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, etc.) programmes.
