Senior Software Engineer at Salt South Africa

The Role

• The firm is expanding its engineering organisation with a growing office in South Africa. Looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join a team building both greenfield products and extending established (brownfield) systems, working closely with colleagues across European and UK offices. This is a chance to shape engineering practice in a new office while contributing to platforms used across the firm.

What You’ll Do

• Design, build, and maintain backend and full-stack features on a Supabase + TypeScript stack. Work across greenfield projects and existing brownfield systems, balancing new development with thoughtful extension of what’s already in production. Implement and maintain authentication and access control integrated with Microsoft Entra ID. Own CI/CD pipelines and repository workflows using GitHub and GitHub Actions. Use Claude Code as a core part of the development workflow to accelerate delivery and maintain code quality. Collaborate daily with engineers, product owners, and stakeholders in the EU, with strong async communication habits. Contribute to technical decisions as the engineering organisation grows, including tooling, process, and standards.

Candidate Profile

• The successful candidate will bring genuine strength in the core stack – Postgres, TypeScript, and GitHub/GitHub Actions – along with real, hands-on use of Claude Code. This is a senior-level role for an engineer who can move comfortably between greenfield product work and thoughtful extension of established systems, and who communicates clearly and reliably with colleagues across time zones.

Must-Have Skills

• Strong professional experience with TypeScript, and building web applications backed by a relational database – proficiency with SQL is a must. Direct Supabase experience is a bonus. Solid working knowledge of Postgres, ideally using Supabase’s default database setup and conventions. Proven track record owning CI/CD end-to-end on GitHub – designing, building, and maintaining GitHub Actions pipelines, not just working within ones someone else set up. Demonstrated proficiency using Claude Code or equivalent. Several years of professional software engineering experience at a senior level, with a track record of owning features end-to-end. Strong communication skills, written and verbal – a must-have given daily collaboration across South Africa and Europe.

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Experience automating workflows in Jira (e.g. via Jira’s automation rules or the API). Experience using MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers with Claude Code, or setting up MCP integrations. Experience working in financial services, private equity, or another regulated industry. Experience working in a distributed team spanning multiple time zones.

• It’s unlikely one person will tick every box above. What matters most is genuine strength in the core stack – Postgres, TypeScript and GitHub/GitHub Actions – along with real, hands-on use of Claude Code.
