    Senior Veterinary Nurse (Radiology) - Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Taking of Radiographs on all species (small, large, exotic animals and wildlife);
    • Perform, prepare and assist with specialized procedures: CT scans, MRI scans, Scintigraphy, contrast studies and ultrasound;
    • Patient handling;
    • Administering and monitoring of sedation and assist with monitoring of anaesthesia;
    • Clinic administration (record keeping, hygiene, stock control, care of equipment, safety measures etc.);
    • Utilising the picture archiving and communication system (PACS) for storage and retrieval of images;
    • Continuous practical training of veterinary and nursing students;
    • Involvement in the formal practical training of veterinary nurses, including progress reporting and clinic assessments;
    • Train new staff;
    • After hour emergency call-out services on a rotational basis;
    • Performing relief duties in other sections in the OVAH; and
    • Performing shift duties.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (DipCurAnim or Dip Vet Nursing) or BVetNurse or equivalent
    • Registration as a veterinary nurse with the South African Veterinary Council; and
    • Three years’ experience in veterinary nursing.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Knowledge of biosecurity measures and procedures and handling of all types of small animals;
    • Meticulous about detail, professional and a responsible person;
    • Appropriate language and communication skills;
    • Organizing skills and a strong service orientation;
    • Physical mobility;
    • Ability to work under pressure and without supervision;
    • Computer literacy; and
    • Ability to work weekends and outside normal working hours when required for continuous service delivery in the hospital.
