The role:

The Strata Control Specialist is responsible to assist the Rock Engineering Specialist and/or Rock Engineer to put measures in place for the prevention of falls of ground on the operations allocated to him/her through providing effective input into Rock Engineering designs as well as support systems and layouts for the allocated Operations.

The duties will include but are not limited to:

• Comply with and ensure adherence to safety regulations
• Adhere to corporate governance implementation
• Conduct Inspections of roof quality and opencast high walls
• Ensure a safe and healthy working environment for all underground and open cast workers
• Ensure and enforce compliance and adherence to legislative requirements
• Compliance with the Emergency Preparedness and Response requirements
• Ensure the effective management of contractors
• Ensure change management process is implemented and communicated
• Conduct quality inspections to ensure compliance to the company’s Rock Engineering specifications
• Analysis of trends (I.e., Safety, Cost, Production, People)
• To collect samples, analyse and report test results of mine support materials and comply to ISO 9001 requirements
• Interact with customers and familiarise yourself with operational concerns and any inherent peculiarities (e.g. HSEC & ISO issues)
• Budgetary control for laboratory materials
• Produce monthly invoices
• Conduct quality assurance tests on support materials
• Participate in and maintain compliance with a support quality assurance system (ISO)
• Participate in investigation (RCFA) of failed support units
• Participate in investigation (RCFA) for high wall failures
• Draft 1SAP reports as identified and specified
• Develop quality controls to ensure alignment of operational Rock Engineering interventions, systems and processes with standardization requirements as well as policies, procedures and operating standards
• Analyse and interpret Rock Engineering data and information to identify changes in the production environment, defects, and safety risks
• Conduct regular inspections and ensure problems are addressed proactively and aligned with Rock Engineering requirements
• Ensure that operating standards, policies, and procedures are appropriate and clearly understood
• Ensure that all activities are performed in line with the Mine Health and Safety Act, and Minerals Act
• Provide coaching and advice to operational stakeholders related to strata control services and support aligned to best practices
• Provide input into the development of safety standards, processes, policies, and procedures

You will need:

• Grade 12 with Math and Science or N3 with Math & Science
• Chamber of Mines Certificate in Strata Control (Coal)/COM SCO (Coal)
• Minimum 2 years’ experience in Rock Engineering within the Coal mining industry
• SANIRE membership
• In-depth understanding of relevant safety and mining legislation including: The Mine Health and Safety Act and the Minerals and Energy Act
• A valid driver’s license
• In possession or able to obtain a valid Certificate of Fitness

Advantageous:

• BSc Degree/National Diploma or Mine Overseer Certificate or Mine Managers Certificate or 2 papers passed for RMC
