    Truworths Design Division Opportunities

    Job Description    

    Truworths has a number of exciting opportunities are currently available in our Design Division:

    • Patternmaker
    • Grader
    • Maker Maker
    • Sample Machinist

    These positions are based at our Truworths Head Office in Cape Town.
    Key Responsibilities    
    Patternmaker

    • Pattern digitising
    • Digitising hard copy patterns into the Gerber pattern system;
    • Maintain pattern numbering system within fit categories;

    Position markers

    • Liaise with marker maker.

    Sample briefs

    • Working with the sample co-ordinator, team & supervisor to turn around sample briefs in within the required sample turn around period.

    Pattern changes

    • Carrying minor styling changes on patterns within the Gerber pattern system;
    • Deletion and addition of patterns within the system in accordance with fit specification changes.

    Grader

    • Liaising with the Merchandisers Planners, Designers, Garments Technologists and Design Room Manager;
    • To alter patterns on the Gerber system;
    • Grade patterns on the Gerber system and produce in line with the production critical path;
    • Pattern Digitising and creating production spec sheets;
    • To produce markers in the most accurate and cost effective manner in line with the production critical path;
    • Prioritise styles for grading in line with production plan;
    • Liaising with the Department Head.

    Marker Maker

    • Responsible for timeous and accurate preparation of markers for cutting. Markers must be production friendly and ensuring best possible rating achieved. Assist with the accurate preparation of print and position markers for bulk garment production.

    TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE

    • Timeous and accurate preparation of markers ensuring best possible rating;
    • Adhere to standard best practice for fabric quality Laying-Up standards i.e. Lay lengths and Fabric Supplies;
    • Checking fabric widths for each style prior to preparing marker and preparing marker accordingly - check border prints, all over prints and stripes;
    • Create a Layplan for required units;
    • Make markers and check to ensure all pattern pieces are included;
    • When requested prepare initial brief ratings on all sizes for costing purposes;
    • Assist in creating Production Print Markers;
    • Assist in creating Production Position Markers.

    SYSTEMS & PROCESSES

    • Challenges the efficiency and effectiveness of systems and proposes modifications;
    • Demonstrates an understanding of the computer system Lectra;
    • Wait for the MMR (Marker Makers Request) from the Production Fabric Co-ordinator before creating a Layplan for the required units to be cut on the required Excel document;
    • High wastage in the marker must be communicated immediately to the Production Fabric Co-ordinator to check fabric meters available;
    • Re-do marker requests from CMT's takes 1st priority;
    • Ensure any marker delays are communicated to the relevant people;
    • Email Layplans to all concerned recipients;
    • Responsible for queries and requests on email;
    • Effectively and efficiently resolve any marker issues at CMT level.

    Sample Machinist

    • Making of showing samples;
    • Production samples;
    • Concept samples.
    • Qualifications and Experience    
    • Patternmaker

    The applicant must have completed a course in pattern making on the Gerber computerised pattern system or have gained experience on this system within previous work experience;

    A consistent methodical approach to pattern storage and numbering is required which enables entire department to identify and apply correct patterns to styles/fits;

    • Grader
    • Must have 5 years’ experience using Gerber;
    • Minimum 1-2 years’ experience in similar role;
    • Must have experience of working with fashion outerwear and Tailoring;
    • Gerber and grading knowledge is needed.

    Marker Maker

    • Diploma in Clothing Design / Pattern making, Pattern technology (Gerber or Lectra) Gerber or Lectra Marker Making Excel, Word/MS Office 3 – 5 years in a Production Lay Plan and Marker Maker position.
    • Sample Machinist
    • Qualified sample hand;
    • Machinist experience.
    • Competencies

    • Team player.
